Why did people used to fear comets?

When Halley's Comet passed in the early XXth Century, there was just enough science to analyze the chemical content of the tail, but not enough scientific familiarity in the general population to make sound evaluations about scientific findings.

It happened that spectrography showed the comet's tail, through which the Earth would pass, contained hydrogen cyanide, which everybody knew was a poison. What they failed to appreciate was the extremely low concentration of it.

Of course, there's a long history of comets scaring people, as folks are used to a very steady and unchanging sky and anything that goes "wrong," such as a comet or an eclipse, simply MUST be cause for concern.

What is subjective anxiety?

Subjective anxiety is a feeling of unease or worry that is experienced by an individual. It is a subjective experience, meaning that it is unique to each person and cannot be measured objectively. Subjective anxiety is often characterized by feelings of tension, nervousness, and fear. It can be triggered by a wide range of events or situations, and may be accompanied by physical symptoms such as racing heart, difficulty breathing, or stomach discomfort. Some people experience anxiety in response to specific events or situations, while others may have chronic anxiety that is not tied to any particular trigger. If you are experiencing anxiety that is affecting your daily life, it is important to seek help from a mental health professional.

What phobia is the fear of drains?

There does not appear to be a scientific name to specifically describe the fear of drains. Perhaps the fear stems from a fear of losing something valuable down the drain, or the resulting mess should something clog the drain. A fear of swimming pool drains or street drainages may indicate a fear of drowning.

Will an abuser play on your fear of abandoment?

You bet they will! They will use every ploy in the book to keep control of their victim. They will have the victim's head so full of lies about how tough things will be without them (especially financially) that the victim will honestly believe there is no hope of them surviving on their own self esteem.

There is help and it's called the Abused Women's Center in your area. They are there to help and will usually put you in a "Transition House" or "Safe Place" away from your abuser. Councelors will also assist you in court. They often help you find a job and your own place to live. If your can't find your local Abused Women's Center then call "Mental Health" and they will lead you in the right direction.

Good luck! answer Oh yeah they will! My N found me right after a divorce. OK so I was vulnerable. Didn't like being alone...yada yada. The first night I had him over my house I heard him humming the tune "lonely Girl" under his breath. It seemed a little creepy and a tad malicious. What a red flag it shoud have been! many months later and after considerable pain and heartache I have finally dumped him for good. I will always remember that incident and how he had me "pegged" so early on. By the way, I am beginning to enjoy being on my own.

In the UK building regulations before 1958 what was the minimum height for a handrail on a domestic stair?

According to "Joinery and Carpentry" by Richard Greenhalgh and others, which was current when I served my time between 1956-1961 (sorry the books are not dated) the recommended minimum height for stair handrails was between 2'7" and 2'9". We used the average of 2'8" or 34" I do not know if that was a fixed code requirement in those days.

This measurement is taken vertically from the nose or the tread to the top of the handrail.

See this sketch http://www.builderbill-diy-help.com/image-files/balustrade.gif

Modern codes such as the BCA where I live state that the minimum height should be 865mm which is 34" which as you can see, it has not changed at all.

What has changed is the height of the Handrail or balustrade on the landings.
In the BCA it is now 1050mm which is 41" or 3'5". In the 1950's and for a long time after it was 36" or 3'.
