Protests, Riots and Civil Unrest

Protests are often held as peaceful demonstrations. However, during times of civil unrest, a small spark can set off a violent riot. Protests have happened all over the world, and are sometimes history-changing events.

Location of 1967 race riots?

Newark, N.J. had a violent and destructive one. It is not known exactly what touched off this racial strife-which got out of control and the National Guard was summoned. It could not have been a political assasination.

Why did Mayor of Baltimore Stephanie Rawlings-Blake say they gave those who wish to destroy space to do that as well?

Mayor Rawlings-Blake has been struggling to clarify her earlier statement nearly from the moment she uttered it.

"I did not instruct police to give space to protesters who were seeking to create violence or destruction of property," she wrote on her Facebook page the day following the statement. "Taken in context, I explained that, in giving peaceful demonstrators room to share their message, unfortunately, those who were seeking to incite violence also had space to operate."

Clearly, she was speaking about supporting the Constitutional right of free speech, and appears to have been trying to illustrate the difficulty law enforcement faced in trying to balance giving space to peaceful protester's, while at the same time denying it those who would foment riot and unrest.

Do active duty service members have the right to political protest?

Service members have the right to attend political protests, however, in doing so they are restricted to attending as a person as opposed to a representative for the force under which they serve.

For example, it's fine for an Army service member to attend a political rally, so long as he/she is not dressed to represent the Army. If a service member dresses in a way that purposefully makes the person seem like a representative of their armed force, (IE; that the Army as a whole supports the political movement) then disciplinary action may be taken.

You can read more about service members' rights to political activities on the Department of Defense's page at the link below: Political Activities by Service Members of the Armed Forces, Feb. 19, 2008.

What is the meaning of the Irish hex sign?

One of the most popular hex symbols is Dutch Irish. It features a large, green shamrock, the traditional good luck sign of the Irish, as the design's center or heart. A pair of Irish Distelfink birds shower the shamrock with a "double measure" of happiness and good fortune. Trinity tulips add faith, hope and charity; the decorative heart is overflowing with love for all. This design proclaims good luck of the Irish.

It is my understanding that the Irish hex sign was created by the Irish of General Gerorge Washington's troops with the intent to irritate the Pennsyvania Dutch soldiers with whom they encamped, but the Pennsylvania Dutch maintained their own culture enclave. Even in Berks County the Irish settled in the coal mining regions farther north and the Pennsylvania Dutch in the farming areas. Intermarriage was frowned upon but occurred occasionally with mixed results as far as social stigma results. The Irish hex sign was promoted in the encampment with the slogan, "Hurrah, hurrah, the Irish ain't much but they're a whole lot better than the Pennsylvania Dutch!". Evidently, achieving a united United States in order to fight the British was not an easy job.
