How are animals who live in the rainforest adapted to survive?
Different animals have different adaptations which help them succeed in a tropical rainforest. The clouded leopard, for example, has a spotted coat, which helps it disguise itself in the jungle. This is useful when the animal is hunting, helping it to hide from its prey. Monkeys which reside in the rainforest have adaptations which help it survive in the canopy of the rainforest. Its opposable thumbs, long arms, and prehensile tail help it to move quickly and efficiently through the treetops. A sloth's body is adapted such that it only has to come down from the trees to urinate or deficate once a month, allowing it to stay off of the forest floor and away from predators. A giant anteater has strong claws adapted to breaking open fallen tree trunks, and a very long tongue which allows it to get to hard-to-reach insects which its diet consists of.

Rainforest animals are facing a tremendous amount of threats due to human activities. Climate change deforestation and poaching are a few of the major threats to rainforest animals. Many species have already been driven to extinction due to these threats and many more are expected to follow. Some of the animals that are currently being threatened in the rainforest include:
Due to deforestation many species are being forced to relocate or face extinction. Deforestation is caused by humans clearing land for agriculture timber and cattle-ranching. This has caused many species of birds mammals and reptiles to lose their habitats and become endangered. In addition poaching is a major threat to rainforest animals. Poachers hunt for animals for their meat fur and body parts. This has caused a decline in the populations of many species and some have even been driven to extinction.
Climate change is also having a major effect on rainforest animals. Rising temperatures changing rainfall patterns and increased levels of carbon dioxide are having a major impact on rainforest habitats. This has caused many species to become threatened as their habitats become less hospitable. As temperatures continue to rise many species will face an uncertain future.

Why is preservation and conservation important in living things?
Biodiversity refers to the diversity of life forms within a given ecosystem, biome, or the entire earth. When people speak of "conserving species," they generally are referring to the goal of maintaining this diversity of life.
Typically the first reason people think of for conserving species diversity is the aesthetic value of species. Each species can fascinate us with its uniqueness, generating public appeal.
More objectively however, the importance of conserving species diversity rests upon the ecological services that each species performs within its environment. That is, each species is important for how it generates and processes resources in the area in which it lives. Each species produces and consumes matter, which is made or used by something else, according to its availability, creating what is called the food web or the food chain. And when a species goes missing from this network, typically another species or it's products begin to over-accumulate, throwing the ecosystem out of balance.
Thus, species often indicate the health of our ecosystems. Additionally, monitoring species can often be the easiest way to recognize pollution in habitat, providing warning of pollution that could adversely effect human health.

The Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew in England has a very detailed profile of the rafflesia plant. According to Kew, this plant is native to southeastern Asia and is actually a parasitic plant. It has the distinction of being the largest flower in the world. The flowers smell like rotting flesh which attracts carrion-flies who pollinate the flowers. The flower buds can be used as medicine, but some of the medicinal uses are believed to be tied to superstition more than to sound medical science. Small mammals are able to eat the berries produced from the flower. More than anything though, rafflesia has become a popular symbol and pictures of it are published in tourist brochures and on postage stamps. Ecotourism revenue that helps support local residents is also generated from tourists who visit forested areas to see rafflesia flowers in the wild.
I also read through a short encyclopedia-style article on The National Library Board of Singapore's Infopedia website. It says that rafflesia flower buds are eaten as a delicacy in Thailand. It also gives several specific examples of how the rafflesia is used as a medicine: childbirth, energy drink, aphrodisiac. This website agrees with Kew in saying that there is no scientific evidence to support the claim of any actual medical powers. Ironically, several potentially toxic chemicals have been identified within the buds and flowers. So, you may want to think twice before eating a rafflesia!
