Modern industrial robots are true marvels of engineering. A robot the size of a person can easily carry a load over one hundred pounds and move it very quickly with a repeatability of +/-0.006 inches. Furthermore these robots can do that 24 hours a day for years on end with no failures whatsoever. Though they are reprogrammable, in many applications (particularly those in the auto industry) they are programmed once and then repeat that exact same task for years.
A six-axis robot like the yellow one below costs about $60,000. What I find interesting is that deploying the robot costs another $200,000. Thus, the cost of the robot itself is just a fraction of the cost of the total system. The tools the robot uses combined with the cost of programming the robot form the major percentage of the cost. That's why robots in the auto industry are rarely reprogrammed. If they are going to go to the expense of deploying a robot for another task, then they may as well use a new robot.
This is pretty much the typical machine people think of when they think of industrial robots. Fanuc makes this particular robot. Fanuc is the largest maker of these type of robots in the world and they are almost always yellow. This robot has six independent joints, also called six degrees of freedom. The reason for this is that arbitrarily placing a solid body in space requires six parameters; three to specify the location (x, y, z for example) and three to specify the orientation (roll, yaw, pitch for example).
If you look closely you will see two cylindrical pistons on the side of the robot. These cylinders contain "anti-gravity" springs that are a big part of the reason robots like these can carry such heavy loads. These springs counter-balance against gravity similar to the way the springs on the garage door make it much easier for a person to lift.

The robot shown at right is made by an American company, Adept Technology. Adept is America's largest robot company and the world's leading producer of SCARA robots. This is actually the most common industrial robot. SCARA stands for Selective Compliance Articulated (though some folks use Assembly here) Robot Arm. The robot has three joints in the horizontal plane that give it x-y positioning and orientation parallel to the plane. There is one linear joint that supplies the z positioning. This is the typical "pick and place" robot. When combined with a vision system it can move product from conveyor belt to package at a very high rate of speed (think "Lucy and the candies" but way faster).
The robot's joint structure allows it to be compliant (or soft) to forces in the horizontal plane. This is important for "peg in hole" type applications where the robot will actually flex to make up for inaccuracies and allow very tight part fits.
The machine at left can be called a Cartesian robot, though calling this machine a robot is really stretching the definition of a robot. It is Cartesian because it allows x-y-z positioning. Three linear joints provide the three axes of motion and define the x, y and z planes. This robot is suited for pick and place applications where either there are no orientation requirements or the parts can be pre-oriented before the robot picks them up (such as surface mounted circuit board assembly)..

The hardest part of this question is the definition of "robot", I went with a machine that receives information and makes adjustments on it's own. The most common place where this can be seen is in vehicle's on the road. Most cars on the road take in many inputs and make adjustment's to brakes or transmissions.

We all know that cell phones are one of today's big crazes. An even bigger one is camera cell phones. Before we know it, all cell phones will probably have camera abilities, because the world today likes to see real images rather than just words. So, it may be a good idea to know what you can do with the pictures you take on your phone after the shooting is done.
Picture Messaging
A common way that people transfer photos from their cell phones to their computers (that doesn't really have any additional cost from your regular monthly bill) is picture messaging. It works pretty much the same as text messaging; you just have to have text messaging enabled on your cell phone. If you don't, this method will not work.
Note: Expect this method to be a little different for various phone models, but the following directions are pretty basic and similar for all phones.
If you would like to send a picture to another person's cell phone or if you want to e-mail a picture to a friend or even to yourself, you just need to open your phone and go to the Menu. Find your phone's Media Gallery and then choose Pictures. At this point, you can pick the photo you'd like to send. Once you have it chosen, go to Options and choose Send in Message (like you're sending a text message). This is where you choose to send it to one of the Contacts listed in your phone or if you want to e-mail it to someone or yourself. Pick the person you're sending it to and push the OK button and then Send.

Another way to handle the pictures on your cell phone that is becoming more popular every day is a wireless technology called Bluetooth. The computer you are sending them to just has to be equipped to accept the pictures.
The most difficult (but it can sometimes be fairly easy) part about Bluetooth is matching the phone to the computer, so they are both compatible with each other. But, once that it is done, sending the images couldn't be easier.
As long as your phone has the Bluetooth software on it, you can send the images without any extra charges billed to you. You can also send photos to other Bluetooth users' phones without any wires or additional charges. This seems to be the most versatile way to go if you're looking to maybe spend a little more money up front for the Bluetooth works, but it will save you money in the long run when you don't have to pay any extra charges when sending your pictures back and forth.
Another way for you to send pictures between your friends and family is to e-mail them. Your cell phone has to have e-mail capabilities for this to work, but a lot of the phones these days come with that ability. You can e-mail them to other people or, as mentioned above, to yourself. Another new technology that is presenting itself with camera phones is an external memory card for your phone. When you have the card reader installed, you just remove the memory card from your phone, insert it into the reader and your computer will recognize it as another drive. You can then get rid of the existing pictures on your phone (since they're on your computer and not lost) and go out and take more. It's that easy!
Just one more reminder: all of these applications work differently with different phones, so make sure you refer to your phone's manual before doing anything you're not sure of.
Of course they can stop working. If you call that "die", that would imply that they somehow were "alive". So the real question is, "are robots alive"? I believe the answer, so far, is "no", and perhaps it will remain so for evermore.
On the other hand...
This is a very good question... because it gets to the heart of what it means to be human and what it means to be alive.
Do dogs die? Of course they do. They live, and then they die. So having a human soul and human intelligence is not required to be able to die. But what if we made it so that dogs never died? If dogs could have their spirit and intelligence and memories transferred to a new body, or stored until they got put into a new body, then could we say dogs died? Yes, dogs would still die -- but only if we didn't do the things necessary to keep them going. Otherwise, dogs (and humans) could be maintained and kept going indefinitely. This is the situation we find with robots, who are much easier to maintain for longer times because of their sturdier parts -- titanium and silicon and composite carbon, as opposed to the squishy jelly that makes up dogs and humans.
Now turn it around. Are robots ever alive? Mankind has long imbued special inanimate objects with spirit. Swords, boats, cars -- men often give these things names and treat them as if they had some kind of living spirit. And robots will probably become more and more lifelike, just like the robots/replicants in Blade Runner; made out of organic material like us, who's to say a robot/android isn't alive? As robots become more and more intelligent, and more able to make seemingly independent decisions, won't robots become more like dogs and less like cars? In which case, robots can die. Unless we take the steps to keep their spirit and intelligence and memories transferred or stored. Just like with dogs and humans.
"Do robots die?" is a much easier question to answer than "Do robots have souls?"
