it really depends on the kind u wanna build. Ive built battle bots and i can give u basics, but most of this u have to nswer on ur own.

if u just want like a car based thingy- go buy the parts. you can buy kits or bases for car bots then go build it and customize.

if u want a tank type robot, i recommend starting from scratch. Ive done this before, and its really fun. all you need is to know where to buy parts. i suggest a local hobby shop for ADVICE!! and buy ur parts online. robotmarketplace.com is a good place to start. good for all robotic needs

after this for like standing robots and junk, i don't know. below is a basic pats list for any robot.

MOTORS- these come in many shapes and sizes. first think of a motor. you thought of like the little things you get from inside toy cars and stuff. sure you can buy that, but theres more. I have bought motors from robotmarketplace that are about the same size, yet if you take two pairs of pliers and try stopping them, you cant. also Mae sure you know what size ur buying. theres antweight class (the size you find in toys) then theres beetle class (the size youd find in one of those cars kids ride around in) then you get into some crazy ones that probly wouldn't be much use. also go for brushed motors. unless ur a serious fanatic, brushed motors are a lot cheaper and have very little difference in ability. motors can cost anywhere from 10 to 100 dollars

Transmitter and Reciever Radio Controls- these can get costly. bout 100 bucks for a cheap set. however, its not just pick randomly here. 2.4 Ghz controlers are the best, if ur not around lots of cellphones. if ur near too many cellphones, the 2.4Ghz controler is messed up by the bluetooth. also becareful not to infringe any of the FCC regulations (don't use airplane only signals for a ground robot or vice versa)

structural materials- gotta make the body out of something bub.

ESC- electronic speed control- takes the power from the battery/receiver and varies voltage to increase and decrease speed based on the signlas ffrom the receiver. cn vary in price. tank ones can cost ~ 60; nontank single motor ESC cost less.

servos- not generally used for tank drives, these are special motors that are used for steering. vary in price, usually cheap~10-20

batteries- this can get very long, so look for the question "Which is better a cell-battery or a Litium Ion battery". there i explained all the types of batteries and their differences

Frankly this is a BIG undertaking but a lot of fun. it can be a headache, so get ready for it and make sure u want to do it, or else you could waste TONS of cash.

I think one of th easiest robot to build is the Lego Mindstorm kit. It comes with a brain (NXT) and when you combine the base kit with many available sensors, you can build good robots.

This is a very open-ended question. I have spent a lot of time watching develpments in the industry of robotics and artificial intelligence and have found a vast array of excellent products.

In the category of military robotics I would have to say that IROBOT's "Packbot" line of robots are extremely well developed and have been combat proven. I have personally witnessed these robots preforming demolitions on IEDs or Improvised Explosive Devices buried in war zone roadways, a duty that was previously preformed by soldiers.

In home robotics there are many different examples. My personal favorites would again come from IROBOT. The company builds a fantastic line of home cleaning robots that clean everything from carpet to hard-wood and tile and even pools and gutters. The "Roomba" series of robotic vaccuum cleaners are leading the industry and have surpassed any competition. The "Scooba" cleans hard floors just as effectively. The "Looj" cleans gutters (believe it or not.) The "Verro" cleans pools. "The Dirt Dog" handles work-shops and garages like a pro, and the new "Connect-R" robot is in charge of keeping families in touch during separations.

In the entertainment field, though it is flooded. The discontinued Sony "AIBO" Entertainment Robot lead the pack. The robot was so friendly and packed with so many features that it still stands out as the top of the line. However, newer models are coming into the market from toy brands that are showing some promise.

The best robot for developers and students as well as hobbiests would have to be the "PC Bot" from White Box Robotics. This fantastic machine is a rolling, seeing, hearing and sensing PC. ASIMO made by Honda is good. It can run and go round in a circle and can recognise objects. Even a person pointing. If u call its name it will turn to face you. If an unusual sound occurs it will turn in the direction. It also looks like a child but there is also a sense of empathy which is the result due to its "human like" behaviour.
