Scorpions

I don't know for sure if there are scorpions in Ohio, however I was climbing a very rocky/dirt cliff at the Metro Park in Euclid, Ohio (suburb of Cleveland) and something crawled out and stung me on my left arm. I never saw what it was. My entire arm went numb. There was minor pain and some swelling at the site of the sting. The numbness lasted several hours and then gradually went away. I've been trying to find out if there are scorpions in Ohio. I guess it could have been some sort of Wasp. I've always wondered if it was a scorpion though. ::Although very rare, it is possible to encounter the Vaejovis carolinianus (Southern Unstriped Scorpion) in areas of southern Ohio that were not affected by Pleistocene glaciation such as Cincinnati, Portsmouth, Ironton, and Gallipolis.

Emperor scorpions do hibernate.They will move every once in a wile.

For a healthy full grown man most scorpion stings are going to cause temporary paralysis and blinding pain for hours but not be deadly. It is only when an elderly person, a child or a sick person is stung that death is very possible. Also, when you are stung by a scorpion... it is an extremely excruciating pain... if you are stung on the leg, it will start as a small, bee sting, type feeling. But then your leg will ache... and it will become hard to use it.

A scorpion will travel through the desert with it's stinger (tail) out ready to attack it's prey so the scorpion can eat it. The scorpion will mostly stay under rocks where it is cooler than out in the boiling sun. They roam around at night to avoid the heat of the daytime sun.

If the arthropods went extinct, it would SERIOUSLY threaten human civilization. For one thing, bees are arthropods and they pollinate most of our food crops. Ants aerate the soil. Spiders keep a lot of insects in check. Without spiders we'd be knee deep in bugs everywhere! Crustaceans are good to eat.

Scorpions are known to hibernate during winter months. They can only survive in temperatures ranging from 68 to 99 degrees Fahrenheit.

Scorpions are filled with poisonous fluids, so I recommend not eating one.

The Emperor Scorpion, or pandinus imperator, will eat insects, small mice, and lizards. Yes people do eat scorpions in Asia, Thailand in the city of Chang Mai that town is commonly known to eat them deep fried though that part of Thailand is mixed with Thais ,Chinese and Japanese people.

It depends on what type of scorpion. Most scorpion species prefer drier, warmer conditions, such as deserts and lowlands. You'll usually find them lurking under rocks and logs, in burrows, between bark layers of a tree or in un-disturbed rubbish piles.

Treatment of a scorpion sting

* Pain at the site of the sting can sometimes be limited with an ice cube.

* Painkilling injections (morphine-based painkiller) may be required and a doctor should therefore be consulted. In the case of more marked symptoms, treatment must be given as for snake bites, and the patient must receive medical treatment as quickly as possible.

* There is antiserum for scorpion venom. Treatment must be overseen by a doctor.

This is not exactly the case. In the US the only dangerously venomous scorpion is the Bark Scorpion, which tends to be on the small end of the scale. It is only dangerous to the very young, the infirm and the very old. If you are stung by a scorpion it is not a bad idea to have it checked out if you have anything except a local reaction. These stings are quite painful and will cause redness and swelling as well. If you have any shortness of breath, muscle twiches in areas away from the sting and/or facial swelling you should seek medical assistance.

Tarantulas taste kind of like crab, but scorpions are slightly more bitter and fishy.
