Start with http://www.browning.com/services/dategun/index.asp for the date. While you're there, identify the model. You'll need that, and its condition, to find a value. The Browning website is notoriously incorrect about the manufacture dates before WWII. Post the serial number here like this 108XXX or 66XX. Condition is the driving force on these guns along with the barrel configuration. COMMENT: An observation, is that you claim a 20ga gun with the Ogden address. The Ogden Utah address is only found on the barrel. Browning didn't make a 20ga gun with that address. Please verify the guage, and see if the serial number on the barrel matches under the receiver, then re-ask the question for the age. (remove the forearm & look at the barrel ring that holds it to the magazine tube for the serial# ) I believe the gun should probably be a 12 or 16ga.

There's a whole string of Sears 300's with different Sears ID numbers, but they are all the same Winchester Model 1400.

I traded and got one the other day and was wondering that someone told me that on the right side of the barrel you will see a small circle with a number in it and that is supposed to be the year mine has 70 so i assume mine was made in 1970.

my gun has a 70 to, but has no ss# ss#numbers start it in 1968 ?

In excellent condition, around $200. The only pump shotgun that Brwoning ever made was the BPS. Ranger was a brand name that was used by Sears and Roebuck. It was used on many utilitarian guns made by various makers. This gun was made by Stevens and sold to Sears to be marketed as the Ranger.

That form of the Stevens name indicates manufacture between 1886 and 1915. Since you have a serial number, the Stevens historian may be able to give you an exact year, for a fee. savagearms.com should have his contact information.

Stevens Arms and Tool Company on various types of firearms. Single shot shotguns were purely utilitarian, with only the engraved, deluxe Model 195 having any real monetary value.

typically, the gun is worth between 100-150 dollars. these guns were never a high end item and were bought more by common folks such as ourselves at a time when money was some what tight. refered to as contract guns , they were made by brand name gun manufacturers for such companies as Montgomery ward , sears western auto, etc. . these guns were produced by the thousands an weren't sold so much for their looks as for their function ," they got the job done ", tho little collector value , most of them have been in the family for many years an generally hold a greater value in our heart , on which some of us can place no value.

I have one that is manufactured by the Savage Arms Corporation. Says Springfield Model 951 and is a single shot bolt action with 3 inch chamber. I have one that is marked "1929 Model". If they were 12 gauges, you'd probably have to give them away. Diamond Arms was one of the many house brand names used by Crescent Arms, which went out of business in 1932. Manufacture records have been lost, and dating is impossible.

Some are, some aren't. If it has Damascus or Laminated steel barrels, do not shoot it. They were never intended for modern powder. Fluid steel or later production barrels may be safe, but if there is rust, dents, or other signs of high wear do not try it until after it has been inspected by a competent gunsmith.

It depends on the model and how well taken care of the firearm is. I collect Stevens shotguns, so very few are worth more than a 300 dollars. Most doubles side by side in any gauge that are in good shape usually go for around that. The model 240 over under .410 is worth about 500 dollars if is in great condition. If it's a grade I- plain barrel, 400- 450 in very good condition. It goes up from their based on grade and type of barrel (ie: matte rib, vent rib). FYI, the grade IV- vent rib (which should include tons of engraving and an auto butt wiper) runs about 4,250- 4,500 in VG condition. Hope you have the later of the 2. -Rick

your looking in the 200- 300 dollar range in good condition (60 to 70%), now that's what i'v seen them go for, i have one also that i would not sell for that amount,,i'v also seen them in the 50-100 range depends on who you talk to,,,enjoy the gun not a lot of people have seen them, they all think it's a 22

"5000" is the Stevens model number, not a serial number. It was marked with the trade name for Shapleigh Hardware in St Louis around 1930. Value as either a decoration or a shooter would be $150-$250. A little more if like-new and a lot less if a basket-case.
