Vocal nodules are pollups or blisters that can form on the focal folds (chords) due to inproper overuse. Proper singing technique is very difficult to master. Because the act of singing takes on very personal psychological and spiritual connotations, using the body as an instrument is a very delicate, vulnerable, and liberating experience. Muscle memory, posture and breath control are key factors in singing. To not loose ones singing voice it is vital to have a comprehensive understanding of the body: the skeleton, the respiratory system, and the vocal apparatus. Open a book on the human body. Explore Feldenkrais and esp. Alexander Technique to understand how to use your body with maximum efficiently and avoid damaging the voice. Think of grounding your feet and raising your head, so as you sing you are being pushed/pulled both down and upwards. You don't have concious control over your diaphragm, but learning what it does and how you can use it through breathing is vital to good singing technique.
