Stalking

Stalking is the illegal activity of repeatedly directing unwanted attention to another person. It usually shows a mental or emotional problem in the stalker or criminal intent. Stalking can be following a person around, trying to talk to them or lingering outside their house, also threats or property damage. However, even sending messages or gifts to an unwilling recipient can be just as harassing and is also considered stalking.

What can you do about your friend being stalked?

Your friend needs to stand up for herself and follow these directions to report her stalker to the police (this list is from the Metropolitan Police):

If you think you are being stalked or are suffering harassment, report your concerns to the police.

How you can help yourself
  • Take a mobile telephone with you when you go out.
  • Carry a personal attack alarm and learn how to use it - do not carry anything that is meant for use as a weapon.
  • Try to alter your daily routines, ask friends to go with you whenever possible, and always try to let someone know what your plans are.
Help the police to help you
  • Keep a record of what happened, where, when every time you were followed, phoned, received post or e-mail.
  • The more details you have the better, how the offender looked or sounded, what they were wearing, the make, and number plate or colour of their car.
  • Keep letters, and parcels as evidence: even if they contain frightening or upsetting messages, do not throw them away and handle them as little as possible.
  • Keep copies of e-mails on disk and print out hard copies, do not delete the original.
  • Making notes in a diary is a good idea. Write the information down as soon as possible, when events are still fresh in your mind.
  • Tape record telephone conversations if you can and keep the tape.
  • If you recognise the handwriting, you can keep letters or parcels as evidence without having to open them.
  • Make sure you keep any stored messages (including text messages) or telephone numbers that you have received on your mobile phone and caller ID units.
  • Tell your friends, neighbours and work colleagues about what is happening.
  • Try to get photographic or video evidence of your stalker (especially if they are someone already warned by the police not to come near you).
Avoiding unwanted calls
  • Answer the phone by saying 'hello', not your name or number.
  • Try to keep calm and not show emotion, many callers will give up if they don't think they're making an impression on you or your feelings.
  • Use an answer machine to screen out calls and only talk to people you want to.
  • If the caller rings again, put the handset down on a table for a few minutes - the caller will think you're listening. After a few minutes replace the handset, you do not have to listen to what the caller has to say.
If you know or find out who is stalking you
  • Do not confront your stalker or even engage them in conversation.
  • Do not, under any circumstances, agree to a meeting to talk about how you feel about them constantly bothering you.
  • Do not respond in any way to calls, letters, or conversations. If you ignore the phone nine times and pick it up on the tenth, you will send the message that persistence pays. Once they have your attention, they will be encouraged to carry on.
  • Ask friends or solicitors to contact them if you want to get a message to them.

How do you overcome lonliness?

To be loved and to be cared for is universal need.

But physical intimacy is only temporary.

Email, chatting, telephones, meetings, partying can be superficial and can not satisfy the deep need of consolation.

Inner restlessness can be overcome only through frank dialogue, but this is rare and hence the best way is to interact at least through forums such as wikianswers. The world is one but it has to realize it and come closer. It is a dire need for every sensitive person irrespective of caste, creed, race, religion and region! Coming together is our need and it has to be realized and worked on.

Why do you love One Direction so much?

One Direction are the best, they are really cool, and my fave band. they're songs are really good and i enjoy listening to their songs. i am a 'Directioner' i follow all five boys on twitter, there is one Irish and four British, which makes it different from any other band. they are a good bunch of lads, and all enjoy a laugh. i always watch their twitcams if I'm not a school. Liam, Louis, Niall, Zayn and Harry are great guys, and try to see anyone at any concert. they're so grateful to their fans, cause we brought them here and made them what they are today. they always try to follow anyone they can and always cheer people up. and that's why i love One Direction. i don't care if you don't, let them haters, hate. these five good looking lads have always wanted to live the dream of singing, now they have got it, people don't appreciate it. let them live their dream of becoming superstars, and in know they have done that but don't bring them down for it. I love them five guys, and i always will...

Can you give an example of a veiled threat?

  • A veiled threat is a sentence given to another that can have two meanings and be taken as information or a joke or a threat. Example: 'Now that I've told you my private secrets I may have to kill you' and the person laughs or on a more normal basis 'If I ever found someone going out with my girlfriend I'd kick the crap out of them so bad they would be in the hospital for a month.' This person may be suspicious of the person they are talking too, but put the sentence in such a way that they are simply talking about anyone, but know full well that the person they said it too gets the drift of what the threat is all about.

If someone drives by your house every day to see if you are home is that stalking?

If you do not know the person then it can be dangerous and you should let someone know immediately that you are nervous about it. If it continues then you should try to get the license number of the vehicle and if you can't still report it to the police. If it is a person you know such as another student or coworker they may not be stalking you, but are too nervous to ask you out and trying to get up the nerve to come see you. On the other hand if you have just broken up with your boyfriend/girlfriend or husband/wife and they are driving by your home repeatedly then report it to the police and how often they drive by.

What if you are being falsely accused of stalking someone and you are a child?

Well if you are not stalking anyone then you did nothing wrong... you should ask your parents for help with that, explain the situation and then have them help you take steps to make sure that whoever accused you does not bother you.

Again, if you did nothing wrong you should have nothing to worry about.

Why do people become obsessed with other people and am I being stalked when I have made it clear I am not attracted to him and I told him I was disgusted by the thought of being intimate with him?

  • Some individuals can fall deeply in love with another or they fantasize about that person in their own mind and therefore become obsessed with them. Generally these types of people can be shy and have low self esteem or confidence. Other individuals simply cannot take no for an answer and can be narcissistic right down to dangerous with 'if I can't have you then no one will have you.' Be careful how you choose your words and do not engage in conversations with him or tell him how disgusted you are by him because you are playing a dangerous game. He may be the type of person that could harm you. Tell your parents; friends about this person and give his name and where he lives. If he continues to bother you then complain to the police and at least it will be on file and if it gets worse then get a 'Cease and Desist Order' put on him which will constitute that he cannot come near you or bother you. However, and depending on certain people that are obsessed with their victim or a stalker this piece of paper may not phase on them at all. Unfortunately, the police can do little until he shows some signs of aggression or harms you. Be very aware of your surroundings and try to go out with a friend or stay in groups of friends. If you drive do not park underground; always look in your back seat before getting into your car; once in the car lock your door immediately; do not park near vans or too far away from where you are going and try to leave a building or go into a building with a group of people and if you walk do not walk at night alone or even go for a jog alone and go with a friend. If you are out visiting a friend tell them you will phone when you get home and do so that your friends know if you do not call something is wrong. Change your phone numbers; locks if need be and do not leave any windows or sliding doors open. Never underestimate a person that is obsessed with you. If you find you are nervous staying alone stay with family or a friend for a few weeks in hopes the obsessed person will leave you alone.

How can I file a protective order against an individual whose physical address I do not know?

In short, you can't.

However, you can report the crime that you feel makes on necessary. And if that crime is pursued by the District Attorney, the police will be instructed to find him for purposes of questioning or arrest.

And at that point his address of record would be available.

Best bet? Explain the situation to the police - or an attorney in your area - and see what they think.
