Why are antibiotics ineffective in treating viral infections?
Antibiotics are ineffective (while not always) in treating viral (virus) infections because of how the medications take effect. Antibiotics work by changing the body's PH to kill off bacteria. Virus's have to have a host to live and therefore can adapt to the changed in the body. So successfully kill viruses, one has to destroy the DNA within it.

Can Straterra cause chest pains in children?
My son is 7 and he was on his forth day of the medicine. We were at his soccer game and he began complaining of chest pains. We called his Doctor and he said it was highly unlikely that the medicine would be causing this. He could not give us a reason for the pains though and the child has never complained of them before he started the medicine...
it is ABSOLUTELY the medicine! go to the Strattera.com website and look at the prescribing information
My 10 year old son has irregular heartbeat as well as a skipping pulse, his doctor told me it was not the medicine but it happens after he takes it in the mornings at school. The school nurse checks his vital signs and made me aware of this problem. He has been on Straterra for four months.
Can Straterra cause violence and impulsiveness?
I've been taking 120 mg of straterra for several months and have found it to have a very positive effect on me, I'm calmer than I've ever been. i'd have to say I'm doultful about it causing violence or impulsiveness
My son is 8 years old. Diagnosed with ADD and dyslexia. I know I sound like a mom in denial here, but I promis Austin has NEVER been a disipline problem. He has NEVER had his folder signed at school. Doctor put him on Adderol and we had really bad side effects. Austin, who is usually very likeable and outgoing, turned inward and became very quiet and unsocial. Again, not a behavioral problem, but just completely anti-social. We tried Staterra in December. Started with the trial pack and then went to 40 mg. We have given it a try, but gosh, he has become so unfocused and hyper and back talking at school. He become a behavioral problem at school. His friends even started backing away. This is VERY unlike him and the teacher and his tutor both, asked that I reevaluate my decission to put him on Strattera. In fact his teacher said his impulsiveness is unbearable. He is like a time bomb waiting to go off. I have heard wonderful stories about Strattera, I desperately wanted it to work. I liked the idea that it wasn't a stimulant, but he has just become so obnoxious and out of control we are going to stop taking the Strattera.
This *really* sounds like a manic episode. Even though Strattera doesn't release a flood of chemicals like stimulants do, it does elevate norepinephrine levels. Irritability, hyperactivity and impulsiveness can be a symptom of mania, which can be caused by an excess of norepinephrine. The same thing happened to me when I tried Zoloft and Ritalin. I would take him in to that doctor ASAP.
quite the opposite. straterra will help with patience and anger outbursts in most people. but you never know how it can react with an individual.
With out knowing your child personally, its hard to guess. But i will say tht while Strattera is not known to induce manic behavior in individuals, it CAN aggravate an already cycling manic depressive. In other words it isn't known to make kids manic, but if you are bi polar and having a hard time regulating your episodes (being on an even keel) it can make the cycling from manic to depressed more intense.
my child has been on straterra a week and has gotten very irritable and has had outbreaks of anger....she's also got dilated pupils and no appetite; she's already very thin so she's going off it immediately.
My daughter has been on Straterra for about a year and prior to putting her on it she had violent outburst and serious impulsiveness. This has been reduced about 85 percent on 25mg doses. While determining her ADHD condition it was revealed that there is another disorder called ODD that has alot of overlapping characteristics and can be misdiagonosed. If your child or yourself is having violent and impulsive reaction you might ask you doctor about evaluating you or your child for ODD. Sometime the Straterra relives mild cases of ODD but for people who are nominally ODD another treatment plan would be more effective.
I was on Straterra for about 3 months. I had to stop taking it at the request of my family because of my attitude and behavior. I was a completely different person who got upset at any and everything and borderline violent. It wasn't like that in the beginning though. It was a wonder drug in the beginning!!
Is it okay to dissolve Straterra in juice?
The capsule is not supposed to be opened but I have found a great way to get any type of pill down my 5 year old, just scoop a bit of ice cream in a spoon and roll the pill in it and tell him to swallow without chewing it. He loves it! It tastes great and it is so nice not to have to beg, plead or hold him down to get a pill in him! I buy those new tiny ice cream cups and always keep one handy for his pills.
Is stomach discomfort and nausea a common side effect of taking Strattera with milk?
My son was on Strattera for quite some time and he has stomach discomfort and nausea the whole time. It didn't matter if he took it with or without milk his stomach still got upset. It also caused him to cry a lot and be VERY emotional. We switch him to Concerta and the side effects seem to be very minimal. (he's been on it for over a year now) If the symptoms continue I would consider having your doctor change the medication!! Hope that was some help!!
Obviously, I can't provide you with a clinical answer. I can only tell you about my own experience. I have a somewhat addictive personality but I have never felt like taking more Strattera than the recommended dose. YMMV of course. I just don't find Strattera fun. If it didn't work the way it does, I certainly wouldn't look for the stuff to entertain myself.
Can Straterra cause a sleep problem?
According to Eli Lilly's Strattera Web site, "problems sleeping" are a common side effect.
I have found it really hard to fall asleep no matter when I take it. I have tried everything from eating and taking it at different times, nothing helps
i am fairly new to all the meds, but have recently been dealing w/ my step-son taking Straterra. He is only 12 and it seems to make him want to sleep constantly. But i dont believe that it is given to him at the same time everyday and he also travels between parents home constantly which i dont believe helps.
When I first started taking Strattera, I definitely had sleep issues. Though I can always fall asleep, I would have fitful sleep. I would dream vividly, but find myself unable to really exit the dream to wakefulness. And then at some point in the night, I would wake totally, and be unable to sleep for a while. At this point, I would worry about things. I would finally fall asleep and sleep fine for the rest of the night.
I've been on Strattera now for nearly 8 months and I have found the fitful sleep to be much, much less. Occasionally I'll have those weird, vivid dreams, but not nearly as often as I did at the beginning. And while I still usually wake up, I have learned to ignore my worries, knowing that when I wake in the morning, those issues won't be there. But it has taken time to get to this point.
I do find Strattera makes me tired during the day, but I will try what the other person has mentioned, about being strict on when the dose is given. I'm really bad about that, and I think I can point to the times when I get super tired during the day having to do with failing to dose within a certain window.
For me; yes. I've been on Strattera 120 mg for 3 months, and my sleeping problems still get worse.
Some nights I don't sleep at all. It makes me very frustrated. But the funny thing is; the pills are making me wide awake in the daytime. I feel that I don't need much sleep.
But, of course, I do. So from time to time I have to use Xanor - I belive you call it Xanax in the US - to get some sleep.
I'm now thinking about cuting down on my dosage. It's a shame really, because it works for my ADD.
My son who is 12, has been on Strattera for 4 months now. For the first two he was fine, his concentration great, and loving all its effects. He took it in the morning at 7 am before school, but in the last several weeks, he has been very sleepy in the morning, and restless and insomniac at night, waking at 2 or 3 am. His concentration has gone down considerably, he even has aggressive outbursts again. He has taken melatonin before and done well but to take it on a constant basis seems odd for his age. The last two night we have changed the 7 am ritual for 5 pm, and by 9 pm he is falling asleep right away, with nothing additional. He tried biofeedback last week and not even that worked as well as the change of schedule. So who knows, I am still trying. It seems that if he gets poor sleep he´s adhd worsens no matter what dosage he takes. Anybody else doing this?
I am 27 yrs old, and have been taking straterra at about 10pm(1-2hrs before bed)with some milk (for my stomach). I also take 3mg of Melatonin 1 hr before bed. I can sleep pretty well (say 4-6hrs soundly, the rest somewhat light).
The worst time for me was taking straterra in the morning or afternoon. It makes me tired at first then wired and restless. If you take it after dinner it seems to be the least bothersome. Melatonin really helps and I don't plan on taking it forever.. its a lot better than taking ambian which makes me hungover..
i am 15 years of age and have been on strattera for at least a year and i find it extreamly hard to sleep and only get a maximum of 8 hours with out tosing and turning and continuosly waking up
Is heartburn a common side effect of Strattera?
My 14 year old son has been on Strattera for two months and complains of heart burn.
I am a 52 year old male eating a fairly bland diet. I won't say that Strattera causes frequent heart burn but it appears to contribute significantly to mine.
yep, seems to be a side effect. i am 30 years old and am trying this medication. i have never had heart burn in my life. i woke up this moring (3 am) to horrible heartburn pain. i had to run to the store to get rolaids (didn't help). so here i am still awake and in pain. i also have severe diarreha that has been going on for the last 4 days. this is my seventh day. if these problems continue i am not going to keep taking it.
I am 16 and have been on Strattera for a week (4 days of 18mg and 3 days of 25mg). I have noticed slight heartburn. I never have had it in my life. It's not bad, but I don't know if it's worse putting up with adverse effects or ADD.
My 11 year old son just started taking Strattera 2 weeks ago. He has never had Heartburn before, however now he gets severe pain within 5 minutes of eating anything. The pain is so bad that he rolls on the floor in pain which has lasted up to 3 hours. Nothing over the counter has helped so far. I took him in to the Doctor this morning, and he told us to discontinue Strattera as this is a known side affect.
In my case, Straterra has helped me focus enough to bring my eating under control, which has significantly reduced my heartburn. I have been on it for three months with my doctor upping my dosage. I would say that no, it does not cause heartburn.
Yes. Am up to 80mg now for 5 days and now have heartburn so bad it woke me up at 3:30 am and is still with me 9 hrs later. Does anyone know if this is a temporary side-effect or is this a chronic one? I'm gonna ditch the Straterra as I also have no motivation, am chronically nauseated and breaking out in a sweat each time I finally muster the motivation to get moving physically.
I've been getting heartburn around 6pm the last few days. I think it's a combination of the Strattera, and getting too hungry -- the Strattera actually makes me forget to eat! First time in 52 years! So I take Gaviscon, which is the only thing that works for this kind of heartburn (I used to get it from eating greasy meat late in the day). So try Gaviscon, and eat a healthy snack if you can't eat a meal -- don't get too hungry. And stay away from animal fats, chocolate, caffeine, the usual things they talk about with acid reflux disease.
Hi Everybody... I wrote back in October with the question about the heartburn. Thank you all for your feedbacks. My daughter, who is now 14 has been on Stattera for about 7 months now. She's on a high dose. 60 mg in the AM and 40 mg in the PM. She still does get heartburn just about everyday, She takes Nexium with the Stattera and that seems to really help her out. The only problem is that she hates taking pills!! She was diagnosed with ADHD when she was only six yrs old. I'm still not too happy with her schoolwork...and she also has no energy to do what normal teenagers do. It does seems to make her feel tired alot, even after all this time. Does anybody have any more side effects that weren't mentioned? Thank You!! :)
All these answers were really helpful for me also. My 12 year old son has been taking this since February and the heartburn has just recently gotton worse. We may have to go back to Ritalin. It also makes him tired.
I am fifteen years old and I have been on Strattera and I have been getting really bad heart burn recently. As a matter of fact I have it really bad right now which is what led me here. I have noticed that when I take it with a meal I don't get heart burn but when i take it even fifteen minutes afterward i get heart burn really badly
I just started taking Strattera (40 mgs a day) and for the first time in my life I have heartburn!
It was so weird, and I was trying to figure out what had changed -- and then I remembered the Straterra was new, so I "googled" straterra and heartburn and this page came up.
Now at least I know why I'm having heartburn -- I don't remember reading it as a side effect on the info in the package.
I took Ritalin for almost 20 years but then was getting some anxiety so the doctor thought I should get off a stimulant.
We'll see how we do with this heartburn.
I am 14 and have been taking Strattera for about 3 1/2 weeks and i get horrid heart burn and i cant sleep (how does that help with school?). I plan to talk with my doctor about it soon.
If you are not use to taking Strattera and especially if the drug is not prescribed for you, you will get high off of it. You should only take the drug under a doctor's direction.

Regrowth off hair that was lost due to taking Strattera?
Regrowth of hair lost due to Strattera (atomoxetine) can vary from person to person. While some individuals may experience hair regrowth after discontinuing the medication, others may not see significant improvement. It's important to consult with a healthcare provider to determine the best course of action, as they can provide guidance on hair loss treatment options and assess any underlying issues. Additionally, regrowth may take time, often several months, depending on individual factors.

take it mid-day for a day or two, then start taking it at night
Is it safe to mix Strattera and dxm based cough medicines?
Yes, although dxm will linger in your system longer because your body won't be able to metabolize the dxm as good as without Strattera.
