Subaru Outback

You need a wiring diagram for your year Outback. These are available from eBay sellers, usually less than $10. If you are adding additional load to a circuit that is not designed for the load it will really come in handy.

Surely you know that they have made Subarus for a lot of years, at least since the early 70s, and made a lot of different models. They started out with sealed beam headlamps which take an entirely different type of bulb and different method of replacing.

Perhaps it would be best if you checked with a local garage. If they will allow you to watch you can decide if you have the skill to change it yourself next time.

Transmission fluid is added through the dipstick tube. The dipstick tube is located close to the firewall at the back of the engine on the driver's side. The dipstick handle is yellow and you may have to move some hoses around to see it. To add fluid you will want to use a long funnel, available at the auto parts store or Wal-Mart. Although it is possible to get the fluid in without the funnel, it is much easier with. --Ken

Under the hood, Drivers side strut tower just behind the washer fluid resevoir....should be 2 hoses going to it...1 in 1 out...

The recommended oil for a 2000 Subaru Outback is 5 W 30. This oil can be purchased at any auto parts store.

You can find the knock sensor on the top side of the engine under the intake manifold. It is easiest to find from the driver's side and is at the back of the engine block.

The Bank 2 Sensor 1 Air/Fuel Ratio Sensor is on the left side of the Left Hand Front Exhaust Pipe, just below where it connects to the engine. Can't miss, it stands out like a sore thumb.....

If the wet smell is coming from the passenger front area it could be that the condensate water from the a/c is leaking in to the car because the drain tube is clogged with debris. I had this problem, what happens is the crud from trees and such collects in the lower windshield area and clogs the drain tube. You need to get under the passenger side of the engine towards the firewall and find a rubber tube coming down. Stick something flexible up the tube or try to vacuum it out

P1137: Front O2(oxygen) aka A/F(air/fuel) Sensor Circuit Range/Performance Problem.

In 2003 I believe that they still recommended Dexron III for automatic transmissions. Check your owner's manual. Newer Subarus (2005 and up) use a special fluid that is generally only available from Subaru.

if you mean the lambda sensor it could either be located just after the turbo or it will be on the up pipe to the turbo its all according which model you have but just unplug it and unscrew it and replace it and then plug it back in.

Go to you local library and get the repair book, its free to use or a few cents to copy.

Locate a small, black button protected by a black cup on the bottom edge of the dashboard, just up and left of the brake pedal. It is not on the floor or under the dash, but right at the edge, in front of the on-board diagnostic computer connection. Put your keys in the ignition, and when you locate the button, press and hold it. turn on the ignition (not start the car) while holding the button for around 20 seconds and . You will hear the locks lock and unlock three times. This should fix your problem.

If you have difficulty locating the button, you're probably looking to hard for it--mine was hanging from a wire at the very edge, not even protected by a black cup.

The 2.5 liter H4 engine has a major problem with getting blown head gaskets. Mine had this problem at only 50,000 miles. The coolant then backs up inside the container and your engine overheats drastically. If you don't get it fixed quickly you can blow your engine.

Open hood. Locate plastic housing directly behind the light (with wires entering in center). Entire housing twists a 1/4 turn to remove. This will reveals high and low beam bulbs. Low beam bulb (standard H1) is removed by unlatching wire retaining clip. Insert new bulb, clip and re-seat plastic housing.

Be sure to not touch the glass on the new bulb. The oil from your skin will cause the bulb to overheat and blow.

On mine, (a H6-3.0) the light comes on after 50 litres (11 gallons) or so have been used - and according to the manual that leaves a reserve of about 15 litres (3-ish gallons) - about 30%. I'm not sure if the tank can be run until it's bone dry, but on my old 2.5L '97 GT I'd driven it to the less-than-a-litre-left point. Not that I'd reccommend that.

This varies so much from car to car. My car does not even have a replaceable fuel filter. Best advice is to check your owner's manual.
