402 Questions

Can a tank withstand a RPG?

Depends on the tank, WHICH RPG (there are several) and where it is hit. In the case of the M1A1 Abrams, the hull and turret will survive survive being hit with a standard RPG-7. Tracks and running gear can be damaged. Other tanks that do not use the Chobham armor of an Abrams can be killled with an RPG.

It is extremely hard to use a handheld antitank weapon to hit anything on a tank it'd be effective against - and that goes for any tank in use today. Handheld AT weapons are really good for two things. One is taking out armored personnel carriers. APCs have much thinner hulls than tanks do, and unless "supplemental" devices like chainlink fence (seriously!) are applied to an APC a handheld AT weapon can slice through the hull easily. The other is taking out fortified positions. The M72 LAW, which the US Army issued for decades, was horrible as an antitank weapon but if you fired it through a window it would do some serious damage to your house.

How did World War 2 change the nature of warfare?

There was introduction of the atomic bomb, and mass production of tanks.

Did tanks in world war 2 run on diesel for their fuel?

What is a better overall tank the American M1 Abrams or the British Challenger?

The Challenger. Although the Abrams is one of the three best in the world, the Challenger has greater accuracy, greater offroad speed, superior armour and improved firepower. American tank armour is made by a British company and acted for the Challenger's armour's prototype. Challenger armour has been improvd twice since then.

When was military tanks invented?

"The first tanks were designed by Leonardo da Vince in the late 15th century. However, the first Military Tank was developed in early 20th century after the development of Armed trains."

I don't understand why you have replaced a comprehensive answer with a Wiki-lite, inaccurate one. Da Vinci designed a wheeled, muscle-powered, wooden vehicle with a protective covering for the crew. It was not a tank. It was a covered fighting vehicle, like those that had been in use for centuries. The sooner the world rids itself of the idea that da Vinci was responsible for the tank, the better.

The tank became a possibility only after the development of armour plate, caterpillar tracks, and the internal combustion engine, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Several plans for vehicles very similar to tanks (some of which would be called self-propelled guns nowadays) were drawn up between 1904 and 1912; by the French Captain Levavasseur, the Austrian Lieutenant Gunther Burstyn, the Australian engineer Lancelot de Mole, and the Russian naval engineer Vasiliy Mendeleev, amongst others. Burstyn's idea was the only one that incorporated a revolving turret. However, none of them was actually built.

After a few months of WWI, both Britain and France, separately, began to look for ways of overcoming the deadlock of trench warfare, and various machines were produced. Eventually it was decided in both countries that the best solution was an armoured vehicle moving on caterpillar tracks. In Britain most of the early development was conducted by the Landships Committee, a body set up by Winston Churchill and officially part of the Royal Navy. It was later taken over by the Army, and a series of heavy and medium tanks was built.

In France, similar things took place at roughly the same time. Two types of medium tank were developed in 1916 (400 of each), and the first tank with a turret, the light Renault FT, appeared in 1917.

The British were the first to use tanks in action, but France produced and used more than everybody else put together, about 3,000. In 1918 Germany produced 20 of her own, and used some captured British ones.

You might feel inclined to change this back to your own version. If so, you will be perpetuating ignorance, and it is not worth my spending my time on it.

Which tank is beter challenger 2 or leopard 2?

In what year were tanks first used or invented?

As early as 1482 Leonardo da Vinci claimed to be able to make wheeled, armored, gun (cannon actually) firing vehicles.

The armored car was introduced around 1900.

But, if you define a tank as a tracked vehicle, able to handle rugged terrain, having substantial firepower and used in actual combat, the answer is September 15, 1916.

The British used 31 of their Mark I tanks on that date in the Battle of the Somme.

If you wish to include a revolving turret in your definition the answer is the Renault FT17 introduced by the French in 1917.

Da Vinci's machine was, by today's definition, an armoured car. It was designed to run on wheels, not tracks, and was not very different from many other ideas over the centuries. It was, of course, not driven by an internal combustion engine but was man-powered.

The British and the French developed what we now call Tanks quite independently of each other and began building them in quantity at almost exactly the same time - the Spring of 1916. The British used them first, as described above. None of the first British and French Tanks had a turret. The Renault FT (not FT17) was the first operational Tank with a turret, but Tanks with a turret had been designed in Britain, Austria, and Russia, though none went into production.

Who invented the m1 Abrams tank?

The Chrysler Corporation invented the M1 Abrams tank. They later sold the Chrysler Defense division to General Dynamics.

How thick is the Tiger tank's armor?

The mantlet of the Tiger I was 110 millimeters thick. Note that the tank did not have a sloped or slanted glacis plate, and thus the effectiveness of the armor was not maximized. The Tiger II had 180 millimeter armor, but this was sloped to increase its effectiveness and afford better protection. Use the links below to learn more.

How was the tanks used in world war 2?

In World War 2, tanks were mainly used in the European theatre. In the European theatre, the Allies used tanks mainly for attacking and reinforcing infantry, whereas, with the clever Germans, they used Tanks as single divisions, offence and defence (defending the area they conquered during World War 2. along with this the Germans used tanks to weaken the Allied defences very quickly.

How does a military tank turn?

The Vietnam War M48 Patton tank had a race car shaped steering wheel, the tank driver simply turned the steering wheel like a car, and it went in that direction. If he turned left, the left tracked slowed and the right track rotated faster, moving the Patton to the left; the harder the wheeled turned the slower the left track went. If the tank driver stopped completely, threw the gear into neutral, kept his left foot on the brake and the right on the gas, turned the wheel left...the tank turned left (rotated left) in one spot, called "a neutral steer."

The M551 Sheridan in Vietnam was the same, except it weighed only 17 tons (instead of the Patton's 52 tons) and used a "T" bar instead of a steering wheel.

Regardless of the "steering wheel" or whatever the driver is using to steer the tank, the mechanism by which a tank turns is the same: the tread on the side that is to be turned towards slows down, while the opposite side tread speeds up. Thus, to make a right-hand turn, the right tread moves slower than the left tread.

If the tank is stationary, and the driver is trying to spin-in-place, the tread on the side being turned towards will often run in reverse. This allows the tank to spin around inside its own length.

What countries had tanks in World War 1?

Germany experimented with some models, but mostly used captured British and French tanks.

The answer to this specific question is: Great Britain, France, Germany, and the USA.

Britain and France separately designed and built Tanks in 1915-16. In 1918 Germany produced 20 of her own but also used about 50 captured British Tanks. The USA used Tanks allocated by both France and Great Britain in 1918.

Although a number of other countries considered the idea, no other nation used any Tanks in action during WWI.

What country invented the first tank?

Tanks were first developed and used in combat by the British during World War I

In what war battle were tanks used for the first time?

Tanks were first used in combat during the First World War at the battle of the Somme, although the British Mark I tanks which participated were still experimental at the time.

armored vehicles were used before the somme. trucks with armour welded to them were used where the terrain would permit.

Although tanks were first used at the battle of the Somme, the first time they were used to gain a serious victory was at Cambrai, where British Mark IV tanks equipped with gap crossing bridges manages to smash the German front to pieces along a six-mile line.

One of the reasons the Germans lost WW1 was that they were reluctant to make their own tanks and when they did it was too late. At the end of the war, the British and French had over 6,000 tanks and the Germans had only 20!

This was all to change in the second world war when the British still used obselete tanks with guns that required them to get much closer to the German tanks than their German counterparts, which could simply fire at them while they closed in. It was not until tanks like the Sherman (Americans) and the T-34 (Russians) were used that the Allies armour got strong enough to rival the Germans.

How did world war 1 tanks work?

They were based on farmer's tractors; plated with riveted steel sheets, armed, and put into service.

Why were tanks invented?

During WW1, the war was heavily focused on trench warfare. The allies nor axis could assault each other without suffering heavy casualties due to entrenched machine guns and infantry divisions. Tanks were invented to provide offensive support along with the troops.
