What was the first musical performed in theatre?
Opera evolved from Oratorio- which is sort of sung prayers that follow a certain plot ( such as the Passion Play) and while there is no acting, small bands of ( Pilgrims) no specific costume, may follow the priest around the church while the bulk of the congregation remains seated. Such a work is the Stabat Mater- roughly standing Mother. This was used during the Lenten stations of the Cross and for some odd reason was wildly popular with women. The narrative revolves around, essentially the same path as the ( Passion of the Christ). The odd thing is the entire narrative is based mainly on one song ( or hymn, for lack of a better term) and a good many verses. It starts out on the grim note: With his Bleeding arms suspended!) so you know what to expect. The entire work is essentially based on one song.

What is the theme for the phantom of the opera?
Themes Appearance and Reality The fact that The Phantom of the Opera takes place behind the scenes of the opera almost automatically draws readers' attention to the disparity between reality and appearances. Leroux gives backstage details, starting with the dancers who line up in the first chapter, gossiping, and continuing on to point out the backdrops and the business arrangements that few opera goers are allowed to see. Un-like most backstage stories, though, this novel also goes into details about the Paris opera house that few of the average workers would be aware of, such as the complicated system of tunnels underneath the building, with furnaces and prisons and hoards of rats and even a lake. Some of these details might be exaggerated from reality, but they are plausible as the reality of the novel. They clearly indicate that, as much as the sets and costumes create a false world on the stage, the opera house that visitors enter only reveals part of the story regarding what it takes to put on a grand spectacle. The phantom himself is also used as a symbol to represent the ways that reality and appearance differ. The most obvious example of this is, of course, the mask that he wears. When he is wearing his mask, Christine can believe that he is a poor, misunderstood man who has just not been given the attention he deserves. When he represents himself to her as the Spirit of Music, she responds to his musical gift and really does see him as angelic. Once she sees Erik without his mask, however, she is so horrified that she can never think fondly of him again. In addition to the phantom's looks, however, his whole existence is one big charade. He is greatly gifted, but his talents are in making voices seem to appear where no one is actually talking; in coming and going without being seen; in overhearing conversations that seem to be private; and in making people think that they see things that are impossible, as in when his torture chamber turns out to be a hall of illusions. He is known as a phantom for a reason: no one is ever really sure that he exists. Innocence The phantom's anger with the society that has rejected him is balanced in this novel with the simple innocence of the love between Christine Daaé and Raoul de Chagny. Christine's life story is surrounded by the sort of heartwarming and fantastic details that are common in fairy tales. Her father, for instance, is a kindly old soul and an incredibly talented musician. He fills her childhood with the sweet view of the world that is found in folk stories. Before he dies, he tells Christine that she will be watched over by the Spirit of Music, which at first serves to give her comfort but later, as is common with innocence carried into adulthood, causes her to fall victim to Erik, who uses his talent for ventriloquism to make her loyal to him. Mme. Valerius is another example of the innocence that surrounds Christine's life. She never questions that the younger woman is doing the right thing even when others doubt her, supplying a level of sweetness and naiveté that reflects on Christine's under-standing of the world. The romance between Christine and Raoul is particularly untouched by the harsher elements of reality. From their first meeting as children, when Raoul puts his life at risk in service to her as he swims out into the ocean to retrieve her scarf, to their chance meeting years later at the opera house when they recognize each other, they are true to each other. A few times, Raoul questions Christine about her purity, but he always accepts her word that such questions are misguided. Readers believe so firmly in the couple's innocence that, when the narrator has bystanders remark that it is scandalous for them to go into her dressing room together and close the door, it is the bystanders who seem ignorant of the reality of true love. Horror This book uses several standard horror elements to make the phantom threatening and mysterious. The most obvious of these is the opera house itself, with its high, shadowy ceilings and miles of tunnels beneath. When Raoul and Christine go up to the roof, they are among the swooping gables and heavy statuary that set the ominous mood in other works, such as The Hunchback of Notre Dame. In its cellars readers are introduced to fantastic sights that are hard to believe: legions of forgotten workers who never see the light of day or swarms of rats that are at the command of the Rat Catcher. The most distinct horror device is Erik's face. Though he is described as having a skin disease, its manifestation gives him the exact semblance of a skull, so that even as a young man he was able to travel to county fairs and bill himself as the living dead man. His eyes, too, are described as glowing in the dark, like a cat's. These details might be unlikely in the real world, but they are not at all out of place in a horror story. Topics For Further Study * Examine the history of the Paris Commune, which Leroux says lived in the jails upon which the Opera House was built. Find out how much the underground life led in the 1870s corresponds to the underground life that Raoul discovers while going to find the place where the phantom lives. * This story centers on the opera company's performance of Faust. Read a version of the Faust story and write a short play in which Erik and Faust meet, telling each other about their common experiences. * One of this story's conceits is that, through the use of ventriloquism, Erik is able to make it seem as if his voice is coming out of places that are far from where he is hiding. Prepare a report on ventriloquism: its capabilities, its shortcomings, and its greatest practitioners. In what ways would proficiency in ventriloquism help Erik in pretending to be the Opera ghost? * Study another opera house, either in person or on the Internet. Report on what areas behind and under the stage would be handy for this house to harbor its own phantom.

**Juiliard is almost impossible to get into, first off. . . you have to have "the look". . . and if you don't have "the look", well sorry. . . and 2nd, you have to be able to speak english. . . as in Shakspeare english, and you have to know iambic pantamater, and how to use it with out being obvious about it, so yeah, it is a hard school to get into,
but me being a aspiring actor mixed with my competitive nature am going to strive to get into juliard. . . cuz it is a really good acting school
^sure, these are fantastic schools, but you left out some important ones!!!
NYU - Tisch School of the Arts
University of Michigan has an EXTREMEMLY competetive theatre program
Carnagie Mellon has a great theatre program
Elon is pretty great as well
Keep your options open!
^and for musical theatre: Cincinatti Conservatory, Boston Conservatory, Florida State, Oklahoma City, Northwestern, Syracuse, Ithaca
And...um...I'd take AMDA off of that list.

*Berklee is in Boston (the one that is the music school. The one in CA is spelled Berkeley and is not a P.A. college.) My son is a grad from Berklee in Boston. NYU Tisch has a great MT department and could boast an alumni in every show on Broadway a few years ago. Don't forget Emerson and Yale Drama.
What is the story line of the musical Cats?
Based on Cats the Musical(movie)
It starts on the night that the Jellicle ball is supposed to take place on. The scene is a junkyard with many random items around it and usually has a moon with perculiar lines cutting through it hanging in the sky. The cats come out and begin to sing "Jellicle Sons for Jellicle Cats", which explains what they are, what can do, and what they like to do. Then all the cats come together and say "The Naming of Cats" (a poem by T.S.Elliot), which, if you pay close attention, tells some of the characters names, even if the cat does not get a song. After, the cats finish, the white cat Victoria(or Victorie) does a solo dance, which rings in the beginning of the Jellicle Ball. Quaxo/Mr. Mistofellees (who is either her brother of mate) brings her up magically and the Jellice Ball begins. Munkustrap, the silver/white/black striped tom begins to explain the purpose of the Jellicle Ball, the Heaviside Layer and Deuteronomy(the leader). Then he begins the song about the old Gumbie Cat, Jennyanydots. Basically before here song finished, the Rum Tum Tugger (who is basically a feline Elvis) sashays on stage with heavy guitar music and lots of flamboyant dancing. He performs a flashy number in which he and the other cats sing about how he is never satisfied with anything. Bombalurina(the red cat who dances beside him) is rejected a couple of times, but always comes back to him. Suddenly, the lights dim and Grizabella comes on sage. She had left the tribe as a younger cat and is not accepted by many of the older cats, who wont let the kittens touch her. (Note:IF you look closely during the beginning of this scene, it looks like RTT is saying F*** YOU) Demeter and Bombalurina sing about how everyone rejects her, which the rest of the cats join in on until Grizabella leaves. NExt comes Bustopher Jones, the fattest and the most social of the cats. In contrast to Grizabella, all the cats love him (Note: If you look closely, you can see that Mr. Misto. and Bustopher have similar markings-Misto is Bustopher's nephew) Lightening and scary music anounces a false alarm of MaCavity, the villian cat, but it turns out to be Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer (either bro and sis, or mates). They are petty thieves. They sing a song describing how they work. At the end, the rest of the cats catch them and throw their loot bags away. The music then slows into a sort of lullaby as the leader, Deuteronomy comes in. (Note: Munkustrap and RTT have a great duet here). To amuse Deuteronomy, the cats put on a play narrated by Munkustrap about The Great Rumpus Cat called "The Awful Battle of the Pekes and the Pollicles, together with some account of the participation of the Pugs and the Poms, and the intervention of the Great Rumpus Cat". There is another MaCavity scare, which agains is a false alarm. Deuteronomy, Victoria, Jemima (the smallest) and Munkustrap call all the other cat back to begin the Jellicle Ball, and slowly the cats come back.("The Invitation to the Jellicle Ball") They begin to describe more about themselves and what they do and like. The Ball begins and the cats all lay down for a "nap" but it is interuppted by the appearance of Grizabella, who is scared off. Deuteronomy reaches out to her ,a sign which is seen as love, but she leaves, not noticing him. Deuteronomy then begins the sing "The Moment of Happiness" and Jemima sings a solo part to the tune of "Memory." Gus the Theater Cat is brought in, and tells about his days as a famous actor and his favorite achievesments with the help of Jellylorum (the tall skinny cat). (Notes: Grizabella and Gus are the two candidates up for being the Jellicle Choice->being sen to the Heaviside Layer, and they telll their stories to Deuteronomy to convince him to send her/him). After Gus is led off, the song "Skimbleshanks" begins. Skimbleshanks is the Scottish train cat who catches the mice on the night trains. During this scene, the cats build a giant replica train out of trash found around the junkyard , which eventually "crashes" and all the cats break apart.Again, there is a MaCavity scare, but his one is real. MaCavity rushes on stage and his henchmen take Deuteronomy. MaCavity laughs evily, then leaves. Demeter and Bombalurina jazzily sing about all the evil deeds MaCavity has commited and how he is untraceable; he is called the "Hidden Paw", the "bafflement of Scotland Yard" and "the flying squad's despair". A fiht ensues after the fight as a fake Deuteronomy lookalike is brougt back, which Demeter reveals to be MaCavity. MaCavity, wounded, overpowers the lights, which burn out, leaving the cats in darkness. A search beam emerges, revealing Demeter and Munkustrap nuzzling heads, and the cats sing "We need to find old Deuteronomy". The spot light shoots over to RTT who is lounging and talks about how the cats should get Mister Mistofelees to help them. Mr. Mistofelees is a tuxedo cat who posses magical powers. RTT sings about them in "Magical Mr. Mistofelees". At the end, Misto uses Cassandra(who is possibly his mate) to bring Deuteronomy back. Jemima begins to sing a reprise of "Memory" and Grizabella comes back in and all the cats reject her once more until after she sings "Memory", a song about her rise to fame and then how every one forgot her, and how she is haunted by the memories of it. Victoria gather enoug hcourage to go to her and touch her, a sign of acceptance. The rest of the cats finally accept her and Deuteronomy chooses her to go up to the Heaviside Layer. The cats gleefully send her on her way to be reborn. "The Journey to the Heavyside Layer" Then Deuteronomy gathers all the cats together, and speaks to the audience telling them about the cats. "The Addressing of Cats". THE END

What genre is hairspray the musical?
Lots of the songs in Hairspray would be considered "Broadway" or "Show tunes," because they are from a musical and have that sense about them. Some of the songs, though, revolve around popular trends in the 1960's because it is set in the 1960's, and a couple could be considered jazzy, like "Big, Blonde, and Beautiful."
