By completing the Louisiana Purchase, Thomas Jefferson went against his own philosophy concerning anti-federalism and a strict interpretation of the Constitution, but felt that the purchase was necessary to avoid a potential future war with France who controlled the port in Louisiana. Jefferson thought the purchase would lead to a more agrarian society.
Additionally, he basically followed the line of thought exercised by Napoleon. Napoleon believed that in the coming European war, France would be unable to hold the port city of New Orleans from the British.
With the US now owning the City of New Orleans, Napoleon believed that the Americans were in a strategically stronger position to keep the British from taking control of this geo-politically important city.

After completing the first draft, the committee read, discussed and revised the document before Jefferson prepared a new draft to be submitted to the entire congress. The entire congress then discussed, debated, and made a few changes to that draft to produce the version that is now famous.

He also was a strong supporter of freethinking. He is controversially known for attacking institutionalized religion, and advocating deism. All of this comes mostly from his 3 part book -- The Age of Reason (1794- 1807, released in separate parts).
Another important belief, shown in Common Sense and Rights of Man (supporting the French Revolution), is that a government should always protect the citizenry and their rights and interests. He advocated revolution and independence if necessary.

What were Thomas Jefferson's beliefs and values?
Jefferson valued self-reliance, intelligence, honesty, and hard work. He was perhaps the most able, and intelligent of all the "founding fathers" - a gentleman, farmer, inventor, educator, a strong believer in personal liberty and responsibility. His republican values grew to be at odds with the views of others of this time like John Adam and Alexander Hamilton, who were in favor of a stong central government similar to the English monarchy they had just overthrown.
He was not a big fan of the centralized government called for in the Constitution, and you can thank Thos. J. for a good bit of the Bill of Rights. He was very concerned about any government usurping the rights of the common man. He felt that man had rights, natural rights (such as freedom of speech, expression, etc) that were not granted by any government, but were from 'nature' - and that government could not GRANT rights, only take them away. He was distrustful of the merchant and moneyed class, the banking establishment, and general mercantilism. This rural, independent, "leave me the hell alone' feeling pervaded the southern colonies, but was soon crushed into oblivion by the rapidly industrializing northern colonies.
President Kennedy once hosted a gathering of about 50 Nobel Prize winners at the White House, and he said, "this is probably the greatest collection of talent and human knowledge ever assembled in this place, except for when Thomas Jefferson dined alone."now that's alot of words
