No. The main serpentine belt controls the alternator, air conditioner compressor, and water pump, but the other belt only drives power steering. Since power steering is not critical to driving a small car, it's OK to wait until the belt completely wears out before replacing it unless the car is being driven by someone who would panic if they lost power steering.

I haven't done it, but I think its an easy job. I can't find a link describing how to do it, but its almost self explanatory, there are 2 or 3 bolts, one on top and one on the bottom of the alternator, loosen them and you can easily push the alternator back to loosen and remove the serpentine belt that goes around the alternator's pulley (replace the belt at the same time if you want). You can keep removing the bolts holding the alternator on to completely remove it. You may need some kind of open end wrench in order to get the clearance you need to completely remove those bolts.

Buy the belt and get instructions from the place of purchase which they should have or check for a sticker on the top of the radiator cross member or on the under side of the hood

Jumping the pin connector on the ECU will allow the check engine light to flash on the dash console. The check engine light will flash repeatedly and show codes.

The horn is very cheap and totally accessible, its easy to test it, you want to know if it works but isn't getting power, or if it is getting power but dead. The easiest way to test if an electronic component is getting power is with a voltmeter (you can buy one for as little as $2). Connect the lead of the voltmeter to the leads where they connect to the horn, have someone press the horn button from the drivers seat of the car, and see if there is any power going to the horn. If there is no power, then follow the leads from the horn to their source, look for damage, or a blown fuse in the fuse box under the hood (drivers side). You can test if the horn is working directly by first disconnecting the wires already attached to it, and then connecting jumper cables or suitable test wiring directly from your car battery to the horn - only connect it for a split second, wear some hearing protection! If you hear no horn blast with a direct connection, you just need to buy a replacement horn, they are very inexpensive and easy to install.

Lucky for you, the air filter, and the MAF (mass air flow sensor) are in the same place. Look for a big black box with large diameter rubber hose coming off of it and going toward the engine. The MAF has an electrical cable attached to one end so its hard to miss, remember it measures air flow, so one end of it is down in the flow of air that goes to the engine.

If the A/C is not working on a 2000 Toyota Echo, the pump may need to be recharged. It is also possible that the belt for this is broken or the thermostat is sticking.

Since you need to use a code reader to find out what the problem is anyway, use the code reader to turn off the light while you are at it. Not sure why anyone would want to do it another way, but you can also disconnect the negative terminal on the battery, or pull a fuse in the fuse box below the steering wheel. You might lose your radio presets doing this.

It is not a fuse. It is a relay switch located in the same location as the fuses - it is next to the right fender if you are facing the front of the vehicle and looking under the hood. The fuse box is clearly labeled and any beginner can replace the relays because they are easy to plugin and unplug. On my 2000 Echo, I think fan blower relay #1 was out so I replaced the relay that was labeled as such. The underside of the fuse box cover clearly labels each relay in the fuse box.

It is in the trunk. Look under the carpet and you will see a plastic cover with tools on it. The spare tire is under that.

I suggest keeping a container of some sort (i.e. plastic crate) in the trunk that contains emergency items. I suggest keeping another container in the trunk that contains car cleaning and/or maintenance items. In the cabin itself, keep the essentials (umbrella, car manuals, notepad and pen, etc.) in the glove compartment. Keep your sunglasses and CD's in one of the cubbies by the driver's seat.

I just had the same problem with my 2000 Toyota Echo. i replaced everything! Mass Air Flow sensor, Throttle Positioning Sensor, throttle body, spark plugs, new springs on coil packs, replaced every and all vacuum hoses, O2 sensors (front O2 sensor costs $125), air filter, etc. I even cut the cat conv off the car to check to see if it was clogged! Luckily i had a parts car to work with. Just out of spite, i changed the metal looking sensor that hooks to the top left of the air filter unit (looks likes there is a metal clip holding it in) and that did the trick. I have no clue what it's called. I know it hooks to the left top of the air filter box. The mass air flow sensor (says MAF on it) is on top and this sensor is to the left of that. try changing that and I bet your problem goes away. Good luck! Maybe. Why not use a code scanner to read the computer trouble code. The check engine light is on to tell you that there is a stored problem code. Why not let the computer tell you what's wrong rather than guessing about it. Code scanners can be borrowed, rented or purchased at most auto parts retailers. Clean the mass air flow sensor. Yours may need to replaced however. Also the oxygen sensors go bad and there are 2 of them. The converter shouldn't cause this hesitation on this car. The fuel pump isn't going to either. Corollas have similar problems and it's the MAF. Also check the vacuum hose on the left side of the air filter assembly. There is a small one that pops off if you or a mechanic replaces the air filter.

It doesn't use a Map sensor , it use a MAF sensor , and it is located right on top of the Air filter box

a good rule of thumb for those buying new tires for 2001 Toyota Echo Cars is this.. make sure when you buy tires, all 4 tread styles match, if you mix and match the treads and they arent the same, there might be an inbalance and the car may wobble or weave when driving..

i know from first hand experience with my own 2001 Toyote Echo that i have owned from new with only 114 miles on the car.

ALWAYS use the low port side. You can locate this by the lines coming out of the dash of the car. There is a dust cap with an L on it. If you don't know what you are doing, be cautious. You don't want to over charge the system because you can damage your compressor. They are expensive to change so try to fill it between 25 and 45 psi. Around 30psi is optimal. I reiterate, DO NOT FILL THE HIGH SIDE. This can cause your can of R134 to blow up and turn into a missile. You don't want to deal with that.
