Can you become an army sniper with a GED?
A few months ago, there was a recruiter who posted on this site regularly. According to him, the Army was actual overstrength, and wasn't accepting GEDs at the time - you had to possess at least a high school diploma. That may or may not have changed since then - you'll have to talk to a recruiter to find out. If they're accepting recruits with GEDs again, you'll have as much opportunity to become a sniper as someone with a diploma. However, you don't enlist as a sniper - you'd enlist as... typically an infantryman or cavalry scout... and then you have to prove to your chain of command that it's worth it for them to send you to the sniper course. There's more to it than just being a good shot.
The Navy SEAL emblem or rather the more correct term 'insignia' is made up of four different symbols; Anchor, Eagle, Trident and a Pistol. In each talon the eagle is holding something, in the eagles right talon it is holding a trident which symbolizes the 'sea king Neptune'. In its right talon the eagle is holding a cocked pistol which symbolizes both that they operate on land and that they are always prepared and ready. The anchor displays that the SEALS are a part of the Navy. Here is a detailed image of the Navy SEAL insignia: http:/patrioticseal.comTrident1.jpg Most correct is breast insignia. Are the marines the first to go into battle?
We do things that make us more available than any other branch... we are aboard ships that float the world. If anything ever pops off, a ship of Marines is near by and they've got enough stuff available to attack quickly and fiercely. Also, the president has to get approval to go to war, but technically he has the right to send the Marines on ANY operation that doesn't extend past 30 days. So if the Presidents feels it's necessary to take some kind of action, there's nothing stopping him from ordering Marines to do it. So long as the operation ends within 30 days, or he tricks the system by renaming the operation and starting the 30 days all over again. He can't IMMEDIETLY order the Army though, he needs to go through some kind of process to make that happen.
Who is the sergeant responsible to?
There are several ranks of sergeants. Buck sergeants (three chevrons) and staff sergeants (three chevrons with one rocker) led squads, usually of about twelve men. A platoon had four squads. There was a platoon sergeant (three chevrons, two rockers), the top enlisted man in a platoon. The platoon commander was supposed to be an officer, a second lieutenant or a first lieutenant. Platoon leaders got killed a lot. Platoon leader was the single most lethal job of the war. When the lieutenant went down the platoon sergeant took over, until a new lieutenant was assigned. So, squad leaders reported to either the platoon sergeant or the platoon commander, and the platoon sergeant reported to the platoon commander, unless he had become the platoon commander. If the platoon sergeant was leading the platoon he met with the captain or the first lieutenant commanding the company, with the other platoon commanders, when officers were called to company HQ to discuss plans or receive orders.

It may sound strange, but getting to E-3 is tougher than getting O-1 by going to ROTC and getting commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant. Why go through the hell of Lancing out of boot, when one could instead go for a commissioned straight out of university. No OCS, just ROTC and commission.

A (clarified, CONTINUED)
So, just where did this salary-range--so glibly stated--originate? What are the PRECISE services these folk deign to render? Of course, if the US and the UK didn't choose to be as unenlightened as, say, South Africa, and continue to cleave to the sordid notion that Persons of Disability were merely so much Life Unworthy of Life (consult the original, German, Text--the English text descends far too much into milquetoast euphemisms!), then we might (?) see the enlightened European Solution of Civildienst...it's so refreshing--making Continental pilgrimages--observing bright-eyed 18-year-olds PAing for Persons of all-sorts-and-conditions of disability throughout city, town, village, and countryside. If would should talk about the "Beloved Community," what better paradigm...
Who was the first marine sniper?
US Army/US Marine snipers have existed since the Continental Army/Marines of 1775 (Revolutionary War 1775-1783). Only they were called "Marksmen" or "Sharpshooters" or "Expert Riflemen", etc. The best riflemen of all time may have been the "Kentucky (Hunters) Riflemen" at the Battle of New Orleans in the War of 1812. From those wars, up thru the Mexican War (1846-1848), Frontier Wars (1620-1890), US Civil War (1861-1865), Spanish-American War of 1898, Philippine Insurrection of 1900-1902 (now re-named the Philippine-American War), WW1 (1917-1918 for the US), WW2 (1941-1945 for the US), and the Korean War (1950-1953); US Riflemen (snipers) have been deactivated/demobilized when their services were no longer needed (when the war ended). Then came the Vietnam War. US Marine Corps Gunnery Sergeant Carlos Hathcock became the highest (93 confirmed) ranking US sniper during the war (others have surfaced since his death). In the late 60's the USMC, then the US Army created the first PERMANENT US military "Sniper" schools. During the Vietnam War, snipers were a stealthly, quiet group of men, who didn't advertise themselves; the war wasn't popular...and neither was this sort of profession. For the most part these men kept to themselves. By the the 80's & 1990's Television, Police Departments, Movies, and Commercialized Business's (websites) have become the new market. Sniping is NOT about the rifle (the new .50 BMG) and marksmanship. In Vietnam, US Army/US Marine Snipers were hunters; all snipers are marksman...but NOT all marksman are snipers.
