How did the Ute tribe help the Mormons?

At the time of the Mormon settlement in Utah, the Ute tribe was extremely powerful. While they did have some conflicts with the Utes, for the most part they got along. The Utes helped to defend the Mormons against other tribes and even other gorups of white settlers. They also helped Mormons to know how to survive in the harsh climate. In return, the Mormons shared their food with the Utes. Although many Mormons were suspiscious of the Utes, they understood that it was cheaper and more practical to feed them than to fight them.

Were bodies recovered during the Wilberg mining disaster in Utah?

Injuries to the survivors ranged from cuts and scrapes to head and chest trauma. Six of the injured were taken to Castleview Hospital in Price. One rescuer died there, one was airlifted to a Provo hospital, and three were treated overnight and released Friday morning. A sixth was still being treated, in serious condition with back injuries.

The second dead worker passed away at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo. Another worker there was in serious condition with head trauma but was alert, she said. The third death was confirmed by Kulczewski, the Labor Department spokesman. After the third bore hole was drilled and there were sounds inside the mine, but the rescuers were not sure if it was the sound of falling rock or an animal, three more rescuers went in and all three died from another cave in. One of the dead rescuers had two brothers in the initial mine cave in and quoted to his wife, 'They would have wanted to rescue me.' Those were his last words to his wife. The Wilberg Mine cave in is blamed on small tremors (or earthquakes) but many of the miners are not buying this excuse from the mine owners. There are 22 previous counts on mine safety against the company and safety regulations were not promptly corrected. Not long ago there was another cave in at a different mine and it was 20 days before the miners were rescued, but they were alive! We should all pray for these men in hopes they are just as lucky.

Did Spain own Utah?

YES, technically (de jure power but not de facto). Utah was part of the Spanish region of Alta California. While Spain did have legal ownership of the territory of Alta California as that was understood by other European powers, it never truly extended its functional authority as far north as Utah (preferring to remain in the current states of Arizona and New Mexico). So, while Utah was officially under Spanish control throughout the 1600s and 1700s, the Spanish never really ruled over it in any meaningful way for the native and ethnic-European inhabitants.

Politicians in Utah are not required to reveal their religious preferences, and most do not. Additionally, it would be impossible to list and research all the politicians at the state and local level, since there are hundreds (including city mayors, city council members, etc) We can assume (and it appears to be true) that the percentage of Mormons among politicians in Utah mirrors that of the general population, with about 60-80% being Mormon depending on the area.
