How long does it take to gain rank in the US Marine corp?

It depends on various things. Right now in the Marine Corps promotion is fairly due to the conflict in Iraq. Many senior Marines are leaving early (Usually due to family problems) or get out after 4 years, so promotion and bonuses are pretty high...its all about manpower.

It also depends on how bad you want it. You always compete against your peers. In order to get promoted you must attend schools, get good evaluations from your superior, good physical fitness score, good rifle score...and such. Standards are high...But that is what you expect in the Corps.

Ive been in for 8 years and recently got selected for E-8....

If you are retired military can you collect unemployment?

No ... retirement is much the same as a "voluntary quit". Usually in retirement one draws a pension or retirement income. Besides, in order to collect UI, one also has to actively seek employment at at least 3 places each week ... what is the sense then of being retired?

This statement is not correct, military members are entitled to receive unemployment benefits once discharged, if they are in the coast guard like i am you are entitled to federal unemployment which is at a higher rate. If you want to find out more about your benefits contacts your local employment commission or visit your states website. As far as the retired members i am not sure but will find out and post it.

If a World War 2 soldier was wounded in combat by enemy fire would they automatically be eligible for a Purple Heart Medal?

Yes, one receives a Purple Heart for wounds received from enemy fire.

Automatically? Well, the soldier has to report to an aide station. Knowing government and military regulations, I'm sure a form is filled out and this notifies his unit HQ that he was wounded and they issue a citation for a Purple Heart. Here is a personal example.

During enemy shelling in WW2, my father and his Colonel were both nicked by small shell fragments. The Colonel said "Let's go to the aid station and pick up our Purple Heart." My father told the Colonel that he would not set foot in there with a small scratch. He didn't want to dishonor those who really deserved the Purple Heart. Sure enough, I found a GO that showed the Colonel receiving the PH.

This answer only relates to World War 2: The basic unit can award a Purple Heart. The unit would issue a General Order(GO) that stated the date and location that the soldier was cited for the award. Whereas, other medals for bravery would have to be sent up to higher headquarters for approval. The higher the award, the higher the approval is required.

Can a person with another than honorable discharge receive VA Benefits?

You'd really have to check with the Veterans Administration to be sure, however, unless the regulation has changed - no. I believe one year after separation you can apply to upgrade that "Other Than Honorable" to an "Honorable" discharge and then be eligible for benefits. A lot hinges on your civilian record since discharge. Again, I'm going from memory and everyone knows that's not reliable, so to be sure call your local VA representative and ask them. They can cite you chapter and verse and will even assist you in the application process when the time requirement is up.

If anyone else out there can help this guy or provide more accurate information PLEASE do.

What is the best way to honor your veterans?

We honor our veterans many ways some of them are veterans day and others are much more simple. I myself go up to them and personally thank them for doing everything that they can to keep us free. Another way is by volunteering in places that help our Vets. They have been there for us in the good times and the bad and we need to do more than what we do as a whole. * Fly a flag, visit a cemetery, visit a war memorial or attend a parade.
