When did Audie Murphy earn the Purple Heart?

Audie Murphy earned three Purple Hearts. Here are the dates (and I am including the immediate circumstances) of the injuries. His first was as a staff Sergent, during the Vosges Campaign in France, Sept, 25, 1944, when mortar exploded at his feet, knocking him unconscious, killing two soldiers and seriously injuring three others. Murphy earned his second Purple heart, Oct., 26, 1944, as a 2nd Lieutenant. He was shot in the right hip, by a richocheting bullet from a German sniper, in the Montagne Forest, after which Murphy shot the sniper between the eyes, killing him. Murphy earned his third and final Purple Heart, Jan., 25th, 1945, the day before he earned his Medal of Honor. In the Riewihr Woods, near the town of Holzwihr, he was thrown down by a mortar, which splintered onto fine slivers, wounding him in his left leg.

How much do vets earn in Indiana?

According to 2013 numbers the average salary for a veterinarian in Indiana is $79,000/year (approximately the national average).

Obviously, the salary will vary and be much higher with experience (years in practice), location (veterinarians in large cities earn more), education (board certified specialists will earn more), and practice ownership (practice owners/partners will earn more).

Do you get benefits after a medical discharge?

If the military was the cause of your medical disability, you may receive disability pay. If you're discharged for a previously existing condition, or for a condition which was the result of activities not military related (for instance, if you get into an auto accident while not on duty or conducting military related activities), you're not likely to.

Is disabled veteran's pay countable?

I think what you are asking is "is a disabled vet's pay taxable" this depends on the type of disabilty pay the VA is providing.

Do veterans have to ackowledge gun ownership at a VA hospital?

You do not have to answer it and it would be advisable not to. If you acknowledge gun ownership to the VA and you subsequently get diagnosed with PTSD or the doctor believes that you are a threat to yourself or others, they will notify the appropriate law enforcement agency and your guns will be confiscated. This HAS happened on more than a few occasions and the serviceman's guns were not returned.

I have always declined to answer this question, even after significant pressure and empty threats from the doctor and I keep getting asked on every visit. I have not had any real consequences from declining to answer it. They don't like it, but who cares. One thing that I would not do is lie about owning a firearm. That can potentially hang you up if it comes out that you do. Just refuse to answer the question. Maybe answer the question with a question:

Doctor: Do you own a firearm?

You: Do you own a firearm Doc?

Doctor: We're not here to talk about me. Do you own a firearm?

You: I would not tell you If I did?

Doctor: Do you own a firearm?

You: Doc, I am not required nor am I going to answer that question Doc.

You get the point. Be evasive at first and then lay it out.

Do doctors at Veterans hospitals in the US need a medical license?

All doctors are required to have a medical license. That includes all of the doctors at a veteran's hospital.

How long does it take to upgrade a general discharge to honorable?

There is no general timeset. You have up to 15 years to file to the board of appeals to upgrade your discharge characterization. Generally the rule is six (6) months. So long theres not any punitive action discharges (BCD, DD) then your discharge from Under Honorable to Honorable is usually granted. That period can take a few months up to a year. So try to be patient. A great way to start is at your local VFW post, you will need to complete DD293 found here..(See relaed Link) just copy and paste the domain in your browser. This needs to be mailed to your respective military review board. (army, navy, af,) I believe are the only three (marines, and coast guard are through the department of the navy if I recall properly) You may be required to make a personnel appearence in DC so be prepared for that, or your legal representation. There are resources out there dont fall victim to the myth that "it automatically upgrades", or "its impossibile to get the upgrade" thats bull! Most who complete the leg work (unless its a punitive discharge) get it.

The above answer is incorrect with regard to Navy and Marines. The Navy Discharge Review Board (NDRB) rarely grants upgrades to characterization unless clear inequity or impropriety is proven. The NDRB presumes regularity in the conduct of governmental affairs, and the burden is on the applicant to prove inequity or impropriety. Upgrades do happen, but the applicant normally needs to provide a well documented argument backed up with documentation. I was a member of the NDRB for three years, and adjudicated thousands of cases. There is assistance available including free assistance from the American Legion. There is also a facebook page that is very good you may want to check out regarding military discharge reviews.

Applicants are entitled to two reviews before the NDRB, Army or Air Force DRB's within 15 years following their discharge date, a document review, and a personal appearance before the board. Applicant's should always elect to go to the document review first. If the personal appearance hearing is elected, the document review is waived. I highly recommend seeking competent assistance in order for applicant's to put together the best application possible.

Can you apply for a student loan if you receive the gi bill for college?

Yes, you can. But before you get student loans, talk to your financial aid office at school to obtain all of the federal grants (no payback!) that you may be eligible for. That way, you won't be borrowing too much.

Student loans seem great when you're a student ... but become a very heavy financial responsibility once you are finished with school. Always use as many grants, scholarships, AND your GI Bill funds before you use student loans as a last resort.

Army pay scale in 1966?

When I enlisted in 1964 I was making $64.00 per month After a few weeks I was promoted to PVt/E-2 and it went to $68.00 per month. After about five months I was promoted to PFC/E-3 and it went to $78.00 per month. At about 18 months in I as raised in rank (actually it's not a promotion) to Specialist 4th Class (E-4)and the whopping sum of $104 per month. About this time we got an across the board raise and I jumped to $140.00 per month.

Shortly thereafter I was converted from SP4 to Corporal which is still an E-4 rating but is a Non Commissioned Officer. In theory a SP4 was a Specialist but held no more actual rank than a PFC. (That same thinking went for SP5/SP6)

The pay charts showed Specialist ratings through Specialist seventh class but I never saw anything higher than a SP5. In about 1966 I was promoted to Sergeant/E-5 and made about $200.00 a month. I got out in 1968 as a Staff Sergeant/E-6 making a base pay of $390.00 per month. In addition to your base pay you also drew a few dollars a month uniform allowance, a few bucks for overseas pay, about $50.00 for combat pay if in Vietnam and additional pay for hazardous duty like jumping out of airplanes, etc. There was also extra pay for incentive if you were in a job that was hard to fill or required a lot of training. It could get real good (several hundred dollars a month for some jobs) I was a Military Policemen and the highest extra pay allowed for that MOS was superior performance pay of around $30.00 per month. If you are not confused enough already there was also extra pay for quarters and rations that kicked in at about the E-6 level and really good TDY (temporary duty) pay if you were working detached duty where there was no military base nearby. I think the highest combined pay I earned was a shade less than $500.00 per month.

Depending on where you were stationed the pay was great or terrible. As a PFC and SP4 on Okinawa I was only broke a few days out of each month. The EM and NCO clubs took real good care of you and had lots of "free beer" nights and dime nights. The prices at the Clubs and PX were great. A carton of smokes cost me $1.10. As a Staff Sergeant drawing Quarters and Rations plus SP pay in North East Africa I was living like a king. Even though I was drawing quarters and rations It was kind of a wink wink nod nod thing and I had a room in the barracks and if I wanted to eat in the mess hall nobody ever checked my status. (I think they were supposed to charge you about $0.40 a meal if you didn't have a chow card.
