1991 Volvo 240 won't shift from third to fourth?

In an automatic there is a transmission shift relay that is behind your upper dash vents and can be seen just right of the glove box once you have it removed.

It should be white in color with, IIRC, 6 prongs.

More than likely that would be your culprit. I just went through this on my 87.

If you mean when the 240 replaced the 244 then I believe in the UK it was 1982 on a Y plate. If you mean when the 240 replaced the 144 then I believe it's 1974.

How can you test the fuel pump on a 1992 Volvo 240?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

there is no real way to test a fuel pump you just haft to listen to it. When you turn your key over you should hear it kick in. Listen for it to click and relay from the switch to the pump. Other than that you have no way to test it.

How many fuel pumps has 1991 Volvo 740 wagon?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

On 1990-93 models, Volvo uses three types of fuel systems - Bosch LH-Jetronic, Bendix Regina, and Bosch Motronic.

"[Bendix ] Regina and post-1994 cars have only one pump". (my info source is http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/FuelSystem.htm#FuelPumpandFIRelayDiagnosticTests)

In the Regina case, that single pump is located in the fuel tank.

Volvo 240 Fuel Pump Relay diagnose

I'm not certain where it is in your year... but in my 1991 240 dl sedan it's under the glove box side of the dash... (in an 87 240 DL it's under the kickboard, left of the brake)

I had a terrible time every summer before I figured it out.. car would just crank and not run.. sometimes even in wet damp weather or humid weather.

Finally on the net I read on the "Brickboard" that a guy had the same trouble with 6 volvo's he rebuilt and never was it the computer...

You can tell if the relay is bad if you don't hear that 2 second humm when you turn the ignition key to the on position... if you don't hear it the contacts are stuck in the wrong position or burnt. I hit the relay with my knuckle and in my case it worked again until I could replace it ( a couple of days later.)

there is also a way to over ride the relay by using a jumper relay to get the fuel pump to run without it but putting the jumper in the correct holes of the relay.. which I don't know... but!!!! it will make the fuel pump run continuously..even when you turn the car off.. so don't do this unless you know you'll have to disconnect it when you stop.

If you don't get the Humm with the key in the on position I bet the relay is BAD. You can order one online from a place like "Thepartsbin.com" or other place... about 40 bucks these days.

Hope this info helps.

How do you change the headlight bulb in the 1990 Volvo 240?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

1.) Open the hood 2.) Look directly behind the headlight housing inside of the engine compartment

3.) There should be a black plug plugged into the back of the headlight. The back of the headlight should be a grey cone shaped object and should NOT come out i this process.

4.) There is a black ring around the plug which secures the plug onto the headlight housing, turn it counter clockwise to loosen it until it slides back behind the plug.

5.) Pull out the plug and the bulb should be attached to it. you should be able to pop it right out and put in a new one.

*NOTE: this might require a little coercion as 20 year old plastic parts tend to be a bit difficult. Volvo used pretty quality plastic parts on the 240 so you shouldn't worry too much about breaking anything but you should be careful as parts can be hard to find. Hope this helps, i own an 89' 240 dl sedan so it should be the same as yours.
