Just been in that exact situation. Need to charge battery, but as it's in the boot, you can't get to it!

The way I got around it was to connect up a portable jump start unit under the bonnet which allowed me to unlock car with remote plip.

Once I had removed battery for charging, I just relocked with plip, removed jump start and closed bonnet - all secure.

Do the same to refit battery, but just remember to set ignition to position II before connecting it up. Not sure why, just something Volvo dealer told me I needed to do.

1. Open the hood. Can be tricky if you don't do it much or never.. there is a latch by the driver's foot area on the left hand side of the wall by the foot area. THen the hood latch is UNDER THE GRILL just above the bumper by the driver's side.

2. There are two silver tabs above the light- they hold the light onto the car and they simply pull up and off.

3. The back of the light has a plastic access port that twists off.

4. then the bulb can be unplugged.

5. then the bulb can be twisted out of it's position to free it.

6. the replacement bulb is usually gray tipped with a red seal at the bottom. If you havn't bought it yet look for this one at the part store.

Just stick the new bulb in- plug it in and reverse the previous steps and you are done!

The battery is located in the Rear Tailgate floor panel to the left of the spare wheel well. there is a plastic cover over it that needs to be removed before access to the battery terminals.

This is a very common problem in the early AWD models. My 1999 V70 XC AWD had the Prop (Drive) Shaft removed after a sound like hitting a wrench against a metal pipe got so loud I had to get the problem diagnosed. The two CV joints at each end of the shaft plus the centre bearing had all perished.

You can remove the shaft (1 hour labour max) and drive the car perfectly safely and well as a front wheel drive but if like me you really need the snowcat effect of All Wheel Drive then either a new one from Volvo costing upwards of 850 Pounds in the or find a driveshaft company to rebuild your old one. Can be tricky but mine was done for half the price of new. In the US Colorado Driveshaft have a good reputation for this as do Driveshaft UK in England who did mine.

my best guess since this is a euro car somewhere from 1-3 thousand This will depend on the Transmission in the car. Two types are used in the XC90. For the 6 cylinder engine it is the GM-4T65 and for the 5 Cylinder it is an AW-50/55. Either one can also be All Wheel Drive adding to the cost of replacement. The 5 cylinder two wheel drive will be the least expensive while the 6 cylinder All Wheel Drive will be the most costly.

Open the drivers door and look on the b-piller. There should be a sticker that tells you the tire size for your model. I believe its 235-55-18, but the sticker should tell you for sure.

First, you need to have a butt; second, you need to place the butt on the seat. That should do it. If that does not work, either take the Volvo to the shop or your butt to a proctologist.

Make sure the car is in neutral (park for automatic)

Open the bonnet (hood)

You shall see a red coloured connector by the left hand side fuse board.

Connect the positive to the other vehicle, then connect the negative to the engine.

Always best to let the charge run for a couple of minutes, then start the XC90.

Leave both vehicles running for a few minutes to get the best charge to the battery.

DANGER:

Always connect the jumper cables to dead battery vehicle FIRST.

You may have unburnt fuel sitting in the engine, this can cause an explosion if a spark occurs from the cable connection.

ALWAYS check polarity of the cables are correct BEFORE connecting - this can cause a fire, or even a battery explosion if incorrectly connected.

On my 2004 XC90 the lens covering the position light swings open left to right. The bulb is easily accessible.
