How do you put a corvair engine and transmission onto a Volkswagen beetle chassis?
You have three options here. 1. The Cheap But Difficult Option - You fabricate all the needed parts yourself, including modifications to the Beetle. This is time consuming and requires intimate knowledge of Beetles, Corvairs, and mechanics in general. 2. The Expensive And Not As Difficult Option - Get a conversion kit. Search for one on Google or look in a VW magazine. You will still need a little knowledge of Beetles and Corvairs, and a lot of general mechanical know how. 3. The Really Expensive And Super Easy Option - Pay a professional to do it. There Are several shops able to do such conversions, but be warned that they are not even close to cheap, reasonable, or sane.

Look right under the steering wheel, should be one there.
When people do custom installs, they put in kick panels up front and a tray over the cargo area.

How do you change the oil in a 1974 super beetle?
You will need four quarts of oil, a drain pan, a wash tub and some mineral spirits, and an oil change gasket set. You will also need a 10mm socket, a socket big enough to fit the drain bolt (21mm sounds right but don't quote me) and a torque wrench. Something like a razor blade to scrape off the old gasket would be good too.
First stick the drain pan under the engine and take out the drain plug. You don't need to jack up the car but set the parking brake and block the wheels so you don't get run over. When it quits dripping, remove the drain pan. Unscrew the six acorn nuts and remove the strainer cover, then the strainer. Wash all the parts you took off in mineral spirits--NEVER USE GAS! Dry well. The easiest way to dry the strainer is to swish it around in the air some.
Put the car back together by putting things on the strainer studs (there are six of them) in this order:
gasket
strainer
gasket
strainer cover
copper washers (use the new ones out of the gasket set)
acorn nuts
Torque the acorn nuts to 9 lb-ft--and be sure they've got the same torque, or it'll leak oil. Reinstall the drain bolt with the new washer and torque to 25 lb-ft.
Put 2-1/2 quarts of oil in it. It holds 2500ml of oil, which is a little more than 2-1/2 quarts, but if you put more than 2500ml of oil in the car you'll blow the main seal (which is why all aircooled VWs in the US leak from their main seals) and that is no fun at all to change. A little too little oil is way better than a little too much.
Finally, unplug the center wire on the distributor and crank the engine until the oil pressure light goes out. Plug it back in and start your car.
The door handles and window cranks should have a plastic trim ring between the chrome handles and the door panel. Also, behind the door panel is a spring.
Push the door panel and trim rings toward the door. This should reveal neck of the handle. On the neck, parallel with the door, you will see a pin about the thickness of a cocktail straw. Get a hammer and small punch to gently knock out the pin. Then the handle will slide off.
After that you can pull the edges of the door panel away carefully to access the window mechanism. But take note of where the spring is located and its orientation when you remove the door panel so you can reinstall in the same position.
Good luck.
Why can't i select reverse gear on my 1969 VW Beetle?
You have one of three problems: the clutch is misadjusted, the shift coupler has gone bad or the transmission has gone bad.
The first thing I want you to do is to go to a deserted straight road, stop your car and shut your engine off WHILE YOU'RE IN THE ROAD!!! Set your handbrake and try putting the car in reverse. Does the shift feel good? Or does it feel like you're shifting in a bowl of mush? If your shifting is mushy, that's the shift coupler. Once you get the trans in reverse, make sure no one's coming and try starting the car. If the trans really is in a working reverse gear, it'll jerk around while it's starting and then it'll start going backward. (Which is why you don't want other cars coming toward you!)
If you have a good shift coupler and you can't get it in reverse while you're shut off, take the car to a VW mechanic and have the trans looked at; you may need a new one.

Is there a Hurst stick shift kit that will go into a 1970 VW Beetle?
There WAS, but it hasn't been made in over 20 years. There might be a Chinese copy out there but it isn't as good. There are many aftermarket shifters still available for the old VW's , I recommend the Bugpack shifters as a good inexpensive alternative.

When did vw bugs go to independent rear suspension?
In 1969, although there are a few 1969 Bugs running around with swing arm suspension--Volkswagen bought big piles of parts and made cars with them until they ran out, and they didn't necessarily run out of parts and out of model year at the same time.
What type transmission oil for 1971 vw beetle?
They specified a 90 weight hypoid gear oil for the manual transmissions back when they were made. It is more commonly found, and works just fine to get a 80W-90 weight gear oil or something similar. I have had great success using a gear lube additive called 'Slick 50 for manual transmissions' in these gear boxes for easier shifting.
