Warts are caused by a virus, specifically the human papillomavirus. This virus infects your skin, specifically your dermis. This it does by entering through cuts and 'microcuts', submicroscopic cuts that let in pathogens. So touching a wart or a surface that has been touched by warty material lets in infection and makes you get warts.

This is an old answer, but I'd like to share because of my super successful experience. I had a plantar wart and went to the dermotologist at least 15 visits. He tried acid, freezing, blister forming from a beetle toxin, even scooping it out surgery. Everything you can think of. You wanna talk about painful try getting a section of your foot removed (what happened to "do no harm"). The wart just kept getting bigger and bigger. This went on for 6+ months. Finally I went to another dermatologist, and she immediately sized it up for about 30 seconds and recommended injecting candida yeast into it to stimulate body immune defenses against the HPV in the skin. It's technically not FDA approved for warts, but is FDA approved for other treatments and similar to getting an old school tuburculosis test. She gave me a double dose (effectively a tuburculosis test on my foot I guess) and yes, the tiny needle did pinch and hurt a little, but Nothing like getting skin scooped out and not being able to walk for a week. The dime sized huge wart that started at about 2mm turned black in about 3 days and completely fell off. I went in for another injection 2 weeks later and it was gone. I am told candida doesn't work for everyone, and I am not a doctor, and I can imagine how annoying patients can be with "self diagnosis", but I highly recommend going this route as a 1st treatment if you can. If your immune system is lucky enough to respond to yeast (about 70% of the population I have read), then it is a 100% cure for even plantar warts after just 1-3 treatments. I recently had a new wart, years later, on the same foot. Found another dermatologist that did candida treatments. He injected it after warning me how painful it was. (I laughed it off as a drop of water in the ocean IMHO) And it turned black hard lump 2 days later and I just pulled it off last night after 8 days. I go back in for a 2nd injection next week and I expect it to be dead. Not all doctors will treat with candida and I had to call 3 to ensure this was an option first before making an appointment. Since it's on your FACE, I'd see a DR...Dermatologist. If it has been growing for YEARS it is probably a SKIN TAG and can be removed in a doctors office. There is different types of acids or chemicals to burn off warts.

Here is some of them.

1) Liquid nitrogen. - Liquid nitrogen is placed on the wart and the wart instantly freezes killing the wart and with in two to three days the dead wart will fall off.

2) Bleomycin. - Bleomycin is also known as bleomycin sulfate or blenoxane. It is used as an anti-cancer drug. But can be used to remove warts when all other treatments have failed. Bleomycin is very costly.

3) Salicylic acid. - Salicylic acid is a chemical. This type of acid/chemical is most commonly used in wart removal.

4) Dinitrochlorobenezene - The short form is D.N.C.G this is a chemical. It is a lot stronger then the Salicylic acid. D.N.C.G can only be obtained by a prescription.

5) Cantharidin - Cantharidin is a chemical obtained from beetles or can be man made. Cantharidin is mixed with Podophyllin, placing this on the wart will kill it. Making the wart turn black and soon after the wart will fall off.

I tried liquid nitrogen on several occasions for some plantar's warts on my foot and it didn't seem to do much of anything (they actually spread to my thumb now D:), but fresh garlic cloves seem to do the job. I noticed that the guy before me didn't mention them, so I'll just give a little overview.

Pros: Natural, cheap, effective, safe

Cons: Bad-smelling, not something you can take around with you, and a long time is required for full effect (I bandaged them on for a week or two all day, every day and they still didn't go away).

You can but you have to be aware of the risk involved. A good nail person will see this and keep away and put on gloves first. The water they use is drained so they should clean it after every session...stay away if they don't. Some people mistake a wart on the foot for a plantar wart, but they are still different.

when i was a little boy my grand dad could talk off warts.
