What is a browser cookie?

Browser CookiesAn HTTP cookie is a packet of information sent by a server to a World Wide Web browser and then sent back by the browser each time it accesses that server. HTTP cookies are used for user authentication, user tracking, and maintaining user-specific information such as site preferences and electronic shopping carts.

Cookies have been of concern for Internet privacy, since they can be used for tracking the browsing of a user. As a result, they have been subject to legislation in various countries such as the United States, as well as the European Union. Cookies have also been criticized because the identification of users they provide is not always accurate and because they can be used for network attacks. Some alternatives to cookies exist, but have their own drawbacks.

On the other hand, cookies have been subject to a number of misconceptions, mostly based on the erroneous notion that they are computer programs. In fact, cookies are simple pieces of data unable to perform any operation by themselves. In particular, they are neither spyware nor viruses, despite the detection of cookies from certain sites by many anti-spyware products.

Most modern browsers allow users to decide whether to accept cookies, but rejection makes some Web sites unusable. For example, shopping baskets implemented using cookies do not work if cookies are rejected.

More Information:

A cookie is a piece of data that can be stored in a browser's cache. If you visit a web site and then revisit it, the cookie data can be used to identify you as a return visitor. It remembers the visited pages in your system each and every time by holding data for a single web session, that is, until you close the browser data.

A cookie is a bit of electronic information that can be placed on your computer when you visit a Web site to track what you look at there, recognize you when you return, and in some cases, track where else you go on the Internet. You can set your online preferences to prohibit, limit, or let you know about "cookies" that a Web site places on your computer.

Most cookies are not bad things - you may get the impression that cookies are spying devices ("track what you view") - but for the most part they are harmless and quite useful; for example, a cookie might store your login information for a website or a forum, allowing you to visit that website/forum without logging in again each time. This is all the Wiki s cookie does.

Describe exactly how to open a separate or additional browser session if you already have one running?

If you want 2 browser windows open using the same browser? Click on File > New > Window.

If you want 2 browsers open, just open both. Simple.

I only use Netscape and IE and these work for both. I don't know about other browsers like Opera or Firefox.

AnswerA very useful shortcut key is pressing Ctrl + N (new) while having the active browser window (the window you want duplicated). A new browser window will open up in a cloned fashion. Answer(cheesytacos)

It depends on the browser but in most browsers, there is the Ctrl+N shortcut which starts a new session of what ever browser you are using. Or, you can press file and select new from the drop down menu. But browsers like GoogleChrome and ChromePlus have a settings menu in the top left corner of the browser that shows the option.

*Note: this answer is based on computers running Windows. I do not know about Macs.

A program that finds websites and webpages?

web browser

Everyday there are billions of people using search engines to find information, and Google is the one that is used most frequently. Once people are searching for a product or service that falls into your business range, you will want your website to show up on the first page of the search results, so that your business is visible to your potential customers. The process of doing search engine optimization is tedious and time-consuming, but it is worth doing. Once you've known how Google finds sites, you'll have a clear direction to go.

First, you need to know that Google uses spider program that is also known as crawler or robot. Googlebot, which is Google's crawler, goes to a website, scans the content and documents, and hand off the collected information to an indexing program. The indexer then sorts and stores the terms that appear on the web pages in Google's index database.

Besides, Google can also find a website by links. Once Google finds a page of your website, it crawls the page, and then goes through all your pages by following the internal links. Except internal links, Google can also find you through hyperlinks from other websites to your site. In other words, when Google finds a website or web page that contains a link to your site, it will follow the link to your site. That's one of the reasons you need link building, which can enhance your visibility and help Google find you easier.

Which web browser is the best and fastest?

Fastest in order:

1. Google Chrome- It is fast, but some people claim it uses a lot of your computer resources. Google chrome only offers Skin changer at the moment, only thing you can customize.

2. Firefox- It is not the fastest, but it doesn't use too many resources, you can also download addons for it, which make it very customizable.

3. Safari- It is mostly used on Apple computers, but Windows users also use it, it crashes sometimes, but it is not that bad.

4. Internet Explorer- The pioneer. Its very old, and the most used Web browser, even today. The reason most people use this browser, is because it comes pre-installed with any Windows computer. It is a very slow web browser, it is not recommended you use it, however, most new people on the internet don't know anything about web browsers, and decide to use this. It is very heavy client, uses a lot of resources, it is very unsecured, and some people just get frustrated using it.

You'll have to open and read an Index.dat file.

INDEX.DAT is a hidden index of the Web sites that are visited. It is not deleted when you use Windows to clean out temporary Internet files and so is usually available even if you think you have cleaned out your browsing history. These types of files are what police and FBI extract during investigations.

The files can be found here, but can be found in other locations. Just do a search for them at the Start Menu

C:UsersOwnerAppDataLocalMicrosoftWindowsTemporary Internet FilesContent.IE5
