Can weimaraners be in cold weather?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Yes I have a three year old Weim and she loves playing in the snow and hiking all year. However (there is always a however with Weims) sitting in a cold car for even a few minutes she will start to shake uncontrollably. You see weimaraners have a very short light coat and if they are running they can generate enought heat to have the time of their lives in the cold, but it is very different if they are sitting still and its cold. I would never think of leaving my dog outside when its cold, they just cant take it. They are a powerful and regal animals but they are as naked (and nearly as smart) as humans.

As sporting dogs, if left to their own devices, this breed will often hunt birds, especially waterfowl. We had a weimaraner when I was a kid, and it killed all the geese on our pond, depositing them on our porch! It was seeking our approval, doing the job for which it was bred.

Is a Blue Lacy the same dog as a weimaraner?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

No, it is not. The Blue Lacy is the Texas state dog, bred in Texas using a scent hound, a greyhound, and a coyote & is a fairly new breed [began in the late 1800s by the Lacy family in Texas]. Their blue color and eye color often causes them to be mistaken for weimaraners but they are NOT the same breed.
