I had one of the early mobile phones. They came out for sale in 1984 and I bought my first one about 1988. It was in a leather bag that looked like a purse with a shoulder strap. When you unzipped the top you found a phone that looked like a house phone with a dial and receiver. The entire bottom, under the phone, was the battery. The whole set up was fairly heavy and reception was poor. There were few cell towers then so getting/sending a call was spotty depending on where you were. This is was not a phone you could put in a pocket. Even the early pocket phones were fairly large because of the battery that was needed to power it. They also had an antenna on them so they could pick up the signals.
