A carnivore related to the jackal and domestic dog, two species of wolves are recognized. One is C. lupus, the gray or timber wolf, which was once widely distributed in North America, Europe, and Asia. The other is Canis lupus rufus, the red wolf, which now only occurs in northeastern North Carolina and on St. Vincent's Island off the Gulf Coast of Florida.

What was the name of the mini-series from a few years back about a prince and a wolf?

Release date February 27, 2000 As The 10th Kingdom begins, Prince Wendell prepares to visit the Dark Queen at a state prison. Unfortunately, his visit goes awry when the Dark Queen escapes from her cell with help from Relish, the Troll King. Relish is attempting to break his children (Blabberwort, Burly, and Bluebell) out of jail when the Dark Queen mesmerizes him, causing him to let her out of her cell. Once the Dark Queen escapes, she uses magic to force Prince Wendell to switch bodies with her dog. She intends to kill the real prince, but he escapes though an old traveling mirror to the "10th Kingdom" (our dimension). Virginia Lewis, a New York waitress and the daughter of a single father (Tony Lewis), subsequently finds Prince Wendell (the dog) and together with her father, follows Wendell to another world: the "Nine Kingdoms", each ruled by descendants of major fairy tale stories, The Five Women Who Changed History: "Snow White, Cinderella, Queen Riding Hood, Gretel the Great and The Lady Rapunzel". The Queen has sent a half man/half wolf to track down Prince Wendell, and so begins Wolf's chase of Virginia and Tony. Meanwhile, the Dark Queen primps her Dog Prince to take the place of Prince Wendell (Prince of the 4th Kingdom). Tony is trapped in the prison with the real Prince, while Virginia is kidnapped by the Trolls. Wolf eventually saves her and the two develop a hesitant friendship as they team up to save Tony. The Queen launches her plot to bring down the House of (Snow) White. She uses the magic mirrors that once belonged to the Evil Stepmother from the Snow White fairy tale to chase down Virginia, her biggest threat. Virginia, Tony, the Prince and Wolf are finally brought together, and the four start their journey to regain the mirror that has trapped them in the Nine Kingdoms. Wolf is torn between his feelings for Virginia and his "loyalty" to the Queen. He also must fight against his instincts as a wolf - including his desire to eat raw flesh. The four travel throughout the Nine Kingdoms and face many trials first seen in fairy tales, including growing Rapunzel's long hair, entering a shepherding contest against Little Bo Peep (Sally Peep) and dealing with the troubles of King Midas' Golden Touch (from the Golden River Goldfish). As Virginia gets closer to her goal, she realizes that the Queen is her long lost mother, who after abandoning her family and trying to drown Virginia, traveled to the Nine Kingdoms and became the apprentice to Snow White's Evil Stepmother. In the end, Virginia is forced to kill the Queen in self defense using a poison comb. She and Wolf return to Manhattan (after learning she is pregnant with his "wolf-cub"). Tony decides to stay in the Nine Kingdoms in order to avoid the trouble he left behind in the real world.

Why should a gray wolf be saved?

A gray wolf should be saved because they are important to the lives of humans. Some people believe that they are effective towards humans, but they actually aren't. They try to avoid humans as much as they can. Gray wolves are extraordinary creatures and they are beautiful! I think they should also be saved because they are part of the food chain. Watching gray wolves are very interesting. I hope that answered your question!

Is a wolf a shi tzu's closest relative?

This isn't true. It was said on Dogs 101 that Shih Tzus are the most closely related to wolves because they were the oldest and first to be bred. There is absolutely nothing to confirm this. Other asian dogs, like Chow Chow, Shar Pei, Akita Inu, Shiba Inu, etc. were all bred at around the same time (Not precisely, but close). We don't have enough information to know which came first. And then you have dogs like Siberian Huskies, Alaskan Malamutes, etc. who retained the characteristics of wolves because of the conditions they were bred for. So, if you mean the oldest dogs, any of those asian breeds work. But, in genetic similarity, Shih Tzus are in no way the closest. There are many, many studies comparing wolf DNA to the DNA of different breeds.

A study by the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle of dog DNA finds six breeds most closely related to the dog's wolf-like ancestors.

The study, appearing in Friday's edition of Science, found the Siberian husky, the Afghan hound, Africa's basenji, China's chow chow, Japan's akita, and Egypt's saluki most closely related to the ancient breed and may indicate dogs developed in Asia and then migrated with nomadic humans to other areas.

The analysis involved the study of DNA for 85 common breeds, gathered

""The first major finding was that the different breeds are quite genetically distinct," said Kruglyak. "The dogs of a particular breed are much more similar to one another than they are to dogs of different breeds."

"The researchers said they were surprised that the cluster containing the more ancient breeds of Asian and African origin included such a diversity of breeds-such as the Basenji, Saluki, Afghan, Lhasa Apso, Pekingese, Sharpei, Shih Tzu, Akita, Alaskan Malamute, Siberian Husky and Samoyed. All of these breeds showed the closest genetic relationship to the wolf ancestors of dogs, said the researchers."

Another interesting study I have read compares which dogs behave more like a wolf and compares the level of paedomorphosis (that is retaining juvenile features. For example, floppy ears are typical of a juvenile wolf). The results are surprising. Although it should be noted, it is a very limited number of breeds and a small study. Certainly not conclusive but food for thought.

It concluded the Siberian Husky, Golden retriever and German Shepherd are closest to the wolf, in that order.

Paedomorphosis affects agonistic visual signals of domestic dogs

I also saw a National Geographic study that said Alaskan Malamutes are the most genetically similar to wolves. It was a graph though, so I can't put it here.

But all of these have to do with genetics, and how much they kept the wolf genes. Not which was the first to come from wolves.
