This can be quite difficult as a theme is often disguised, hidden, or made purposely obtuse.
- Ask yourself 'What is the plot and characters of this story really portraying?' The story 'Animal Farm' isn't about a farm full of animals, its about the Russian revolution and the corruption of communism.
- Ask yourself 'which characters does this story seem to favour? Who comes out on top?' The story 'Lord of the Flies' doesn't favour the good guys.
- Ask yourself 'What maxim can I attribute to this story?' The story 'Moby Dick' seems to say 'There really is no good standard for good and evil.'
- Often the theme is more of an emotional appeal then a logical one so Ask yourself 'How does this story make me feel?'

For example, Daniel Defoe uses run-on sentences in Robinson Crusoe, making it somewhat hard to follow and making the reader work to figure out what is happening. That would be an example of style.

Maybe the original purpose was to record events or to keep records of possessions etc. But the ultimate purpose of writing is to communicate.
Your style and tone change whenever you're talking to someone. You are naturally more formal with some people, for example, and more playful or fun-loving with others. It's the same when you write. If you're writing for educated people, you'd use longer words and more complicated sentences. If you're writing for people who're looking for a laugh, you'd use a more humorous style and tone. If you're trying to scare people, you'd use a darker tone and style.
John Fante is one of my personal favourites and has a very similar writing style as Bukowski. Fante was one of Bukowski's major influences and later became one of his good friends.

While I'm not familiar with the two forms of writing referenced in the question, I believe I can extrapolate an answer.
Take a look at the two different descriptors here: diaspora and expatriate. While both terms imply removal from one's native country, diaspora gives more the sense of being driven out, and expatriate lends itself more to a self-motivated migration.
By and large there should be no discernible difference between the two based on the labels. Any differences are likely the result of the source, the writers themselves.

Achebe does not dive right into the court cases, but describes in great detail the ceremony around the Egwugwu court. The details are so vivid and out of the ordinary it leaves the reader wondering what is about to happen.
Expressive style is a style that clearly shows the author's emotion and intention. Writers who are expressive are able to create mood and emotion within their stories. The reader can clearly see what's going on in their minds, and can feel what the characters are experiencing.
Emotive language describes words and phrases that are used to evoke an emotional response from the reader or listener. Speakers and writers wanting to persuade people to agree with them often try to engage emotions, they can do this by including words that carry emotional weight.

The atmosphere of a story is basically the general feeling of the characters. Usually, a ton of dialogue between characters hint at a lighthearted or less intense atmosphere. The biggest giveaway is the way the author describes surroundings without dialogue. If people, objects, or events are described in a dark tone with many negative expressions, the story probably has an ominous tone. If the author uses imagery to express colors, objects, and people in a positive, happy tone, then the story is most likely cheerful, dreamy, or romantic.
Also, the atmosphere in a section of the story may be tense or suspenseful. You can spot the intensity by looking for shortened statements and lines or phrases that repeat.

How can they not use language? Language is the tool of the writer. Depending on the words you use, you can persuade your readers to do many things. If you're writing fiction, you can persuade them to believe in your imaginary world and like or hate your characters. If you're a journalist, you can persuade them to believe certain things by using different words. If you're an ad writer, you can create emotions with your words that make people want to buy what you're selling.
