Between September 29 and October 5, 1944, SS troops surrounded the mountainous area of Monte Sole and searched the villages of Marzabotto, Girzzana, and Monzuno for partisans. SS troops under the command of Walter Reder rounded up and shot 955 civilians, including 216 children and 316 women, ostensibly in an attempt to rout the Italian resistance. The victims are buried in the local cemetery. The massacre was the worst atrocity carried out in Italy during World War II. Reder was sentenced to life imprisonment by a military tribunal in Bologna in 1951, seven years after the slaughter. He was freed in 1985. On 17 April, 2002, German President Johannes Rau expressed his "profound sorrow and shame" to Italy for this event. A good book on this is: “Silence on Monte Sole” by Jack Olsen, published by G. P. Putnam and Sons, New York, 1968
What was the name of a minesweeper that served in World War 2 and the Korean War?
There were a small number that served in Korea compared to the dozens that served in World War II, but several served in both conflicts. Among the oldest was the comparatively small Motor Minesweeper USS Chatterer (AMS-40), launched in 1944. The ship was later transferred to the Japanese Self Defense Force as a coastal patrol vessel.
The larger Auk-class vessels included USS Swift (AM-122) that cleared mines off Utah beach on D-Day and USS Symbol (AM-123) that swept beaches at Salerno during the invasion of Italy. Both were recommissioned to serve in Korea, notably Symbol, serving for more than two years including coastal patrols. In 1972, Symbol became an ocean patrol vessel for the Mexican Navy and was still active (as the Juan de la Barrera) in 2007.
What two aircraft carriers survived World War 2?
The greatest warship in US history (other than the old wooden sailing ship the USS Constitution) was the aircraft carrier, USS Enterprise. The Enterprise fought in nearly every battle in the pacific during WW2, and was the US Navy's most decorated warship. The Enterprise was one of 3 "Yorktown" class carriers: the USS Hornet and the USS Yorktown. Hornet was sunk at the battle of Santa Cruz Islands, and York was lost at Midway; only the Enterprise survived the war. Against much resistence, she was "Scrapped" in 1959. The Enterprise had been saved as a war memorial just after WW2, Admiral Halsey participated in saving her. But she was activated for the Korean War, and when that war ended, she again was placed out of commission. This time, she could not be saved from the "Re-cyclers." Other than the mighty Enterprise; more than 20 Essex class (CV-fleet carriers) aircraft carriers and about 8 light carriers (CVL), and dozens of escort carriers (CVE) survived WW2. Only one light carrier was sunk in the war, USS Princeton.

Counterfire.
Aircraft carriers only go to sea as part of carrier battle groups or carrier strike groups. The carrier is protected by three kinds of ships: cruisers, which carry a high-power radar called Aegis that can detect incoming missiles and that can launch anti-missile missiles, several frigates, which carry anti-missile missiles that are guided by the cruiser's radar, and submarines.
Not only can this radar system detect a missile in flight and direct missiles to shoot them down, it can figure out where the missile was launched from and fire a missile at that place to destroy the launcher.

The Pacific Theater (aka Pacific War) was the naval half of WWII. Although all portions of WWII had naval battles, the Pacific was the Pacific, as the name implies...an ocean. Secondly, General MacArthur reasoned that since a battleship (USS Arizona) started WWII for the US, it seemed appropiate to end it that way.
