How do you fill a Zippo lighter?

To replace the flint in your Zippo, you will need flint, a dime, and a white sheet of paper. Place the white piece of paper on a flat surface and assemble your items upon it. To reach the screw that holds the flint, grasp the lighter firmly in your hand and pull the inside of the lighter up out of the case. Lay the case aside and turn the lighter upside down. You will see a felt pad covering the whole bottom of the metal lighter assembly. With your fingernail, gently pry the pad up out of the casing and lay it aside. If your fingernail are too short to accomplish this, use the dime to pry the edge of the pad up. There is now visible a screw and much wadding. Take the dime and turn the screw counter clockwise until the spring pops up. Remove the spring and screw from the little tube they sit in. Drop the flint into the tube and replace the spring assembly in the tube. Tighten the screw until it is snug. At this time, it can be advisable to fill the lighter. Replace the felt pad in the bottom of the lighter casing. Replace the lighter assembly into the outer case and spin the thumb wheel. The lighter should spark nicely. If you have over filled the lighter, blow into the wick assembly and the flint wheel and try again. The lighter will light within seconds. Discard the paper.

What was the World War 1 trench lighter used for?

Matches were used by soldiers to find their way in the dark. But the intense initial flare of matches gave away their position too easily, and many lives were lost because of this. Hence, the need for combustion without a great initial flare was born. Inventors started improving the design of lighters and by 1918 when the war ended, they were able to be produced somewhat easier.

The real answer is the supply of matches during the war was restricted because timber was required for other purposes and the supply of chemicals difficult to maintain. Matches were also susceptible to dampness so lighters were poplar - In fact, lighters were common from the beginning of the war, ranging from tinder lighters to trench art lighters made from bullets or other discarded material. Wartime lighters were often manufactured behind the lines in ordnance and engineering workshops. J.Williams
