Straightening Teeth

Teeth-straightening is done through a number of techniques. Dentists often require the patient to wear braces to re-align the position of the tooth. Tooth-reshaping is also performed on mild cases, while implants are installed in extreme cases.

How do you brush your teeth?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Using a soft-bristle brush (or rotating, or ultrasonic), brush away from the gumline thoroughly, on inside (lingual), outside, and chewing surfaces. The aim is to remove soft accumulations of bacteria and tartar before they harden into plaque (which would harbor enamel-damaging bacteria and irritate gums). Flossing between teeth is highly recommended, and newer disposable holders make it easy to grip and slide.

How come you are not allowed to chew gum at school?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Well think of it like this, if you chew the gum noxiously it disturbs classroom students. Also the Teachers are not trustworthy of you throwing it away they think you will discard it on other school property, we just gotta deal with that, and in my opinion the gum does not keep you focused it just keeps you satisfied when your mouth is dry and has no flavor until lunch time or until you get home and eat a snack.

Kids should be allowed to chew gum in school! First of all we wouldn't have to stick it to the desk, if we were allowed to chew it in school ,because then we could throw it away without getting in trouble. It's not fair that teachers can chew gum, and we can't!

This is something I cant find the reason why it should be forbidden here is the main reason. Chewing gum (especially mint flavor) raises the brain activity.

And there are more reasons why it shouldn't be forbidden. It is not something that disturbs your class, kids chewing gum does not mean that they are gonna stick it under their desk and many more.

Children are known for sticking there gum under desks and other places instead of the trash can.
Because it can be disruptive and people don't do it responsibly-they leave it everywhere.

No, when you get braces on, the orthodontist is simply applying apparatus to the outside of your teeth, so there is no pain. After a few hours of getting your braces on, you may feel some discomfort as the braces begin to move your teeth.

What is the causes of diastema?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Diastema is a space between two permanent teeth, typically the upper central incisors (front teeth).

Baby teeth have gaps called primate spaces. These are normal and necessary to allow enough room for the permanent teeth to come in.

The most common cause of diastema in adult teeth is malocclusion, or poor fit between the teeth of the upper and lower jaws. This usually can be corrected with orthodontics.

Another common cause of diastema is a short labial frenum. The labial frenum is found at the mid line inside the upper lip, and it is a flap of mucosa and connective tissue that holds the upper lip close to the teeth. If this tissue is short and too tight, it can result in the diastema. This problem can usually be corrected with a minor surgical procedure called a labial frenectomy. This is sometimes done in conjunction with orthodontics to move the teeth together.

What do you do when you have straight teeth but a front teeth gap?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

With the gap like this, it is usually the recommendation that you have the laboratory ( the Dental Technician ) to make two crowns on you two teeth on both sides of the gap. Your dentist should advise to you and teach you about the options... ( the other option might be a denture or a bridge if the gap is more than 5 milimiters). I have been working as a dental assistant for the last 16 years and this is what I would recommend. The crowns put on your egzisting teeth will give the possisbility to make them wider, properly shaped and at the same time to close the gap. With front teeth, the best solution is to make porcelain crowns, they are strong and very "cosmetic" and will serve you from 5 to 15 years depending on how properly your teeth are prepared(cut)and the impression the dentist is taking. I would strongly advise to go to the cosmetic dentist. These are very expensive, however all other general practicioners have a great ability to do that. Just check your friend's dentist's opinion or you call "The College Of Dental Surgeons", in Ontario: RCDS ( Royal College Of Dental Surgeons", same goes for all different provinces in Canada. In USA it might be something like American College of Dental Surgeons. Don't be affraid of the word" Surgeon", all dentist have that "name", it basically means just a regular dentist. Good luck.

Can teeth bands work if you have a very large gap in your front teeth about 6mm or a quarter inch or is a bridge or veneers the only way to go?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Sometimes when the space between the two central incisors is too large, orthodontics (braces) may be recommended. This usually will take approximately 18-36 months depending on the severity of the bite. If considering crowns, veneers on bonded composite material on the two front teeth, you must consider the space. These restorations may make the teeth look too large and it may make the assymetry of the entire six front look abnormal. The best thing to do is trust the dentist. Sometimes the wait on orthodontics is worth it. J. Holsworth, RDH

How long do you have to keep the spacers in before you get your braces?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

While the usual time for wearing them is one to two weeks, it really depends your orthodontist's diagnosis, and what he or she believes is the right amount of time to get the desired result. The actual name for spacers is "orthodontic separators," and while they can sometimes be painful or annoying, they are known for getting excellent results.

Are retainers supposed to make your teeth ache?

User Avatar

Asked by Oujdagirl

Well, when you have a retainer it helps the teeth from going back to being crooked. And if you haven't wore your retainer in awhile or just got one then, it will ache for a short time as your teeth are getting use to it. But if you wear it everyday or every night then it will stop aching.

Why do people get gaps?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

As a dentist, I often come across patients concerned about gaps in their teeth. Gaps are an interesting phenomenon resulting from a variety of causes - from natural to behavioral.

Children's teeth develop gaps as they grow because their jaw is getting bigger and their baby teeth remain the same size. Children may have temporary gaps as their baby teeth start to fall out. This is normal and should not cause any alarm.Gaps in adult teeth are referred to as diastemas. Diastemas appear most often between the two upper front teeth, though they can occur between any two teeth. Diastemas are also normal (take David Letterman, Mike Tyson or even supermodel Lauren Hutton, for example) and like gaps found in children, may result from a mismatch between jaw bone size and teeth size. I

f you are concerned about a gap in your teeth or have any questions, the best thing you can do is contact your dentist.

Other than normal sizing issues, there are three other reasons why gaps may form:

Tumor growths. A gap can be a sign of a serious medical or dental condition. Tumor growths may need to be treated surgically.

Gum disease.Gum disease, which results in a loss of bone that supports the teeth, may be prevented by regular brushing and flossing. However, if a gap is forming as a result of gum disease, you need to see your dentist as soon as possible.

Self-inflicted behavior. These gaps occur when people push their tongue against their front teeth when swallowing or as a result of 'mouth jewelry'. This pushes teeth forward and makes small gaps bigger. Again, if a small gap is getting bigger, have your dentist check it.

Is it safe to brush your teeth with Comet Cleanser?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

You should NOT brush your teeth with Comet!

Comet should not come anywhere near your mouth or eyes.

The chemicals in the Comet are not meant to be used internally (or externally, for that matter). They are poisonous and possibly fatal, if ingested.

Use toothpaste. If there is none, then dampen your toothbrush with water, and sprinkle a little baking soda onto the bristles. This will NOT harm your body, it will clean and whiten your teeth. It doesn't taste very good, but after you rinse your mouth with water you will enjoy the freshness.
