It depends on where you live. I grew up in a town of about 15,000 with no chain grocery stores. However we did have a mall with stores such as JC Penney, Target, and K-Mart. For groceries it was Walmart hands down. For everything else it was a toss-up.

I now live in the Seattle area with major grocery chains like Safeway, Albertsons, and Fred Meyer. Here Walmart is much less competitive. I did some research today and noticed frozen pizza, spaghetti sauce and chips were cheaper. While I paid more for milk, cheese, and frozen chicken.
