The West Bank of the Rhineland was occupied from 1920-30, together with two 50 km 'bridge-heads', one at Cologne, the other at Mainz. In addition, in Januray 1923 France and Belgium occupied the Ruhr claiming thatGermany haddefaulted on reparations. This attempt to go beyond the Versailles Treaty and set up a puppet state in the Ruhrunder French rule was vastly more unpopular in Germany than the Versailles Treaty. It really made the French and Belgians absolutely hated in Germany. The British government distanced itself from the occupation of the Ruhr and ceased co-operating with France on a wide range of matters.

Allied armies were ranging over all of Germany. Hitler was dead, Berlin captured by the Soviets. The country had no oil, its armaments industry was either, destroyed, captured or lacked raw materials. Continuation of the war was futile and would only cause more casualties without altering the outcome in the least. Germany had already fought for much longer than was sensible.

Ever since the end of the Second World War, the German army has been in a sense of disarray of some kind.

Even after all these years, Germany is still struggling as a result of Hitler's actions.

It is only recently, in 2011-2012, that the German military is beginning to balance itself again.

After the end of the Second World War, military-trained men were scarce. So little in fact that many army platoons and corps had to be disbanded after Germany surrendered. Simply because there were not enough men to fill the ranks.

Things didn't get much better during the Cold War either. The remaining German armies were split between Eastern and Western Germany by the Berlin Wall.

The West side of the wall, controlled by the Allies, were very paranoid of the German army, refusing to co-operate with them, meaning further German corps were disbanded.

On the East side, controlled by the communists, the German army was treated as a "slave army". Again, causing more corps to disband.

After the Cold War, Germany managed to slowly set up 11 divisions and 27 Brigades.

However they have gone through so many changes, re-organisations, merges and disbands since then.

For example, 25th German Airbourne were re-organised and merged into Kommando Spezialkräfte (German Special Commandos, inspired by the British Royal Commandos because the Germans admired their performance in World War 2 and the Cold War).

Nowadays, all corps have been disbanded and the soldiers merged into newer divisions or brigades.

In the coming years (2012, 2013+) Germany plans to disband or merge even more of it's army.

- 13th German Mechanised Infantry is planned to be disbanded.

- Airmobile Operations and Special Operations Division will be merged.

- 1st Airmobile brigade will be disbanded and the units shuffled between different divisions.

- None of the heavy divisions will be disbanded or merged. However there are still secret plans to reshuffle the army some more.

In summary, Germany does have a good army. But since the end of the Second World War it has been the centre of so much shuffling, disbands and merges, that in a war the German Army, at it's current state, would be unprepared.

The German Army would make a good defensive force if Germany came under attack. But if Germany was to invade another country, the military would be plagued with miscoordination and confusion.

The German Army were smashed so hard by the allies during World War 2 and disfigured so much by the Allies and communists during the Cold War, that even today the Army is still recovering.

It could be another five-to-eight years before the German Army is ever effective enough to be an invasion force again.
