How do I take care of goldfish in a 5 gallon aquarium?
One goldfish requires 20 gallons on it's own, not only due to the size it can grow, but because they are very high waste producers.
You can look at getting one betta for a 1 gallon tank, but be sure that you clean it at least once a week, twice if necessary.

There are many theories on the topic. Some claim that the memory of a goldfish is only 3 seconds, some one month, and some as long as three months.
The notion that goldfish have a memory of only 3 seconds is thought by some to be a myth, developed by pet shop owners to convince buyers that the small fish tank environment was not cruel treatment of their pet. Others claim that goldfish have been placed in mazes and have shown to remember only 3 seconds of the maze, thus the 3 second memory theory.
The first fundamental problem is that we cannot differentiate a goldfish's memory from it's indifference, or it's ability to swim through mazes. Unlike other domesticated animals, goldfish will swim to the glass of the tank no matter who comes to it; owner or feline.
If you have ever had a fish tank, your goldfish will recognize movement outside the tank in association with their food source. This memory certainly lasts longer than 3 seconds. I don't recommend this test for seeing how long this memory lasts - the results may be fatal to the goldfish.

It all depends on what is causing the problem, it could be because of an infection, constipation, deformity, or egg impaction. Before you assume this condition is untreatable try doing some large 50-75% water changes, feed the fish lots of veggies, or you could try, if you suspect an infection, feeding a medicated food (available at the link posted below) or, if you suspect an egg impaction, attempt to hand spawn the goldfish so it can release it's eggs which are causing the problem.

Maybe you are seeing natural red rays in the fishes fins? If not then there is something wrong with the water. Change some (50%) water daily and see if the red markings disappear. Dont change all of the water.

Any kind of goldfish will mix OK with any other kind of goldfish. Goldfish are all one species with many 'sports' that have been developed by selective breeding. The only No! No! is if you have some well bred fish and don't want them to cross breed at breeding time. Then you will need to keep type with type, otherwise, since they are the same species, they will cross breed and your resultant fry will be almost worthless crossbred goldfish.
