There are seven groups of islands that make up the Aleutian Islands. The groups are the Commander Islands (owned by Russia, not the US) which is made up of two islands: Bering and Medny. The Near Islands which is made up of 16 different islands including Savage Island and Hammerhead Island. The Rat Islands are made up of 12 different islands including David of Island, Bird Rock, and Rat Island. Islands of Four Mountains includes Herbert, Carlisle, Uliaga, Kagamil, Chuginadak, Amukta, Chagulak, and Yunaska islands. The Andreanof Islands is the largest group of islands and is made up of more than 70 islands. Buldir Island is the only Island that isn't part of a group.

While Kingston is marked on many maps as the "capital" no one actually resides there permanently (the appointed Administrator lives in Government House for his or her term of office). It is the site of the Assembly and other government offices. Residents live close to the commercial centre of Burnt Pine some four kilometres away, or on scattered rural allotments. There is no "city" as such on Norfolk Island, whose total population is some 2500 people.

There is so much to see and so very little time to see it all in. If the duration of your visit is limited don't even try to see it all in a week to ten days or it will not be a Holiday but a marathon. Extreme sports are enjoyed only by those trying to push the envelope. If time permits consider at least a day trip to Kauai or the Big Island, both have worthy sites worth days of exploration. Concentrate your first visit on Oahu and you will at least get the biggest bang for your buck. There is enough there for at least a two week Holiday. (As a hint, schedule nothing for arrival day or departure day except a pleasant walk around the neighborhood and a decent meal, it is after all a holiday).
