What is the farthest city from Jerusalem?
Strange as it may seem . . .
If you drove a pencil from Jerusalem down through the center of the earth and out the other side,
the city closest to the point on the earth directly opposite Jerusalem is Papeete, Tahiti.
The point is actually out in the South Pacific Ocean, and Papeete is about 1,000 miles to the north-northwest.
What terrorist group has formally renounced terrorism as a means to reach a settlement with Israel?
The PLO (Palestine Liberation Organization) was initially committed to the destruction of Israel, mainly through the use of armed force. Since its founding, the organization has sponsored many guerrilla raids on Israeli civilian and military targets. In 1974 the PLO received UN recognition, and a government in exile was recognized by Arab nations as a basis for a future Palestinian state, to be formed from land regained from Israel along the west bank of the Jordan River. In 1976 the PLO was granted full membership in the Arab League.

Issue With the Term "Small"
Compared to what ?
Although much bigger than my backyard, the Galilee is a small part of a country that in its entirety is smaller than New Jersey.
Specific Area of the Galilee
The Galilee region encompasses a few thousand square kilometers. It is hard to get an exact figure, because the exact borders of the Galilee are unclear, but if you wanted to get a rough estimate, you could add the size of the District of Haifa (864 km2) and the Northern District of Israel without the Golan Heights (3,324 km²) to get 4,188 km2. To put this in perspective, this is roughly the size of the US State of Rhode Island or one fifth of Israel's overall land area.
Israel has officially designated a National Animal (the Israeli Gazelle) and a National Bird
(the Hoopoe), but the widespread yearning for a National Fish is as yet unfulfilled.
Why was an Israeli buffer zone created?
Following the Israeli Government's 1985 decision to pull back its positions in Lebanon, thus seemingly ending Operation Peace in Galilee (or the 1982 Lebanon War), a follow-up decision ordered the Israeli Defense Force to maintain a buffer zone inside Lebanon. A jointly patrolled zone formed part of a tentative agreement, never ratified, between Israel and Lebanon in 1983.
A small contingent of IDF units were left to patrol the Security Zone in order to prevent infiltration into Northern Israel, and to provide a deterrent force against any attempt by Palestinian or other militia groups to fire longer range weapons into Israel proper.
Over the following decade, the IDF expanded and institutionalized its presence in the Security Zone as commanders on the ground established better fortified posts and more troops. This presence was a direct response to the rise of Hezbollah (or Party of God) as a serious political force throughout Lebanon and a potent guerrilla army in the south
The Austrian in question would be THEODOR HERZL, the founder of Zionism.
When did the Jews start returning to Israel?
Jews have been slowly returning to Israel every single year since the expulsion by the Romans in 70 CE. But modern Zionism really began in the late 19th Century.
Where is the Masada fortification located?
Masada fortification is located in Israel in the Southern District. The Masada fortification is an old and historic fortification that dates back to the first century.
Can Israelis visit Morocco alone?
Israeli citizens can travel to Morocco, but will need to apply for a Moroccan VISA in advance of departure. If you are an Israeli of Moroccan heritage, you can petition the Moroccan government for a Moroccan passport since Morocco has jus sanguinis as a condition of citizenship.
As for whether you want to go alone; Morocco is relatively safe, but if you have never been to an Arab country before, you may wish to travel with someone just so you have safety in numbers. Women are more likely to be harassed or cat-called than are men.
What do people in Israel wear?
Even though it is very important to wear modest clothing to religious places (synagogues, neighborhoods, etc.) there is a raging secular society in Israel that is not afraid to show some body! Showing your stomach is not a big deal in cities like Haifa or Tel Aviv. Also, very few Israeli women wear shorts! Even though it is VERY hot in Israel, wear pants and get used to it. Jeans, stretch, or wide legged pants - you can buy these for basically 5 American dollars in most places in Israel. Shirts that are very "Israeli" can be anything from a tight fitting three quarter blouse or a t-shirt cut at the neck so that it hangs off your shoulders. Scarves are a nice thing to have to cover your hair. If you are going on a hike or walking in the desert you are actually better wearing thin loose pants or a wide cotton skirt than shorts just because you will appreciate the protection from the sun. And don't depend on borrowing sun tan lotion from an Israeli friend. It is not that common. And most importantly tell your male counterparts not to bring really nice clothing. Israeli men dress VERY casually (the classic picture is the shirt open at the neck and khaki pants.)
Lize, Boston/Haifa, Israel
Although Israel is boiling hot in the summer, you must wear a long skirt and long sleeves to get into most of the religious sites.
Liana, Calgary, Canada
Travelling in the Middle East, I found my two most useful clothing choices were: a puffy, white, long-sleeved cotton blouse, and a full, calf-length, black cotton skirt. Both were cut generously enough that I was cool and comfortable, sober enough that no one could confront me, and formal enough that I could wear them to Shabbat dinner (Israel)and to mosques (Egypt) alike.
Miranda, Victoria, Canada
I live in Israel and I strongly recommend a comfortable hat for travellers - I have a packable crocheted hat. This is good for visiting religious sites AND for walking in the sun. It gets quite hot here.
Sue, Kiryat Motzkin, Israel
If you are planning on traveling alone in the cities of Israel take a light weight skirt that reaches below the knee, modest short sleeve top (loose T-shirt okay), and a large scarf (to use when needed...one that covers your arms is preferable). This outfit will get you into the religious sites and keep you from being hassled by the more traditional or religious folk.
Alexy, Hamilton, New Zealand
Shorts and miniskirts are inappropriate for visiting the sacred sites of all the religions, Jewish, Muslim and Christian. Even sleeveless tops are looked down upon by some. Otherwise, dress is casual, even in good restaurants.
Sally MacDonald, Travel Section, The Gazette
In Israel, be sure to dress nicely. Black is popular in the universities, and tight clothing is how to fit in. If you are blonde, watch it! I stuck out big time in Israel and Egypt with my blonde hair, haven't learned exactly what to do about that one. I guess a scarf or a quick dye job?

Why were some US government officials concerned by support for Israel in 1948?
Because some Zionist groups (like the Lehi/Stern Gang and the Irgun) were considered terrorists prior to 1948 by both the British and the Americans. Additionally, many US officials thought that by supporting Israel that they would be "backing the wrong horse" so to speak. The Israelis seemed much weaker than the Arabs and the Arabs were much more likely to hold a grudge against those who supported Israel. (Supporters of Israel in the State Department argued that the US should support Western democracies wherever possible.) It was as a result of this division of opinion that the US State Department was neutral in regards to Israel from 1948-1967.
How many calories in israeli liquors?
It depends on which liquor and which brand you are talking about. It varies greatly.
Does Israel have health insurance that covers circumcision?
Good question! Since Israel is a Jewish state, it's quite possible.
It depends on who you ask.
Most Druze and most typical Muslims would agree that Druze and Islam are separate religions. Druze is clearly an offshoot of Islam, but goes far enough to be a separate faith. (This would be similar to how most Jews see Messianic Judaism, but not the other way around.)
However, anthropologists who classify religion hold that Druze is not significantly different enough from Islam to be a unique faith. Since most Druze values and beliefs are secret, it is highly unlikely that we will ever get a satisfactory answer.
As for myself, if both Islam and Druze can agree that the two religions are distinct, I see no point arguing with them.
Is Israel violating human rights?
Yes. Israel is violating numerous human rights, especially in the West Bank Territories and the Gaza Strip.
Palestinians in the West Bank often have to deal with the problems of military occupation and often have to deal with the following types of human rights violations: Lack of Freedom of Movement (Curfews, Checkpoints, and Searches), Lack of Freedom of Assembly (Protests and Riots are strongly curbed), Lack of Right to Self-Defense (Weapons are denied to Palestinian Civilians - save police), and Violations of Personal Privacy (Israeli soldiers will squat in Palestinian homes).
Palestinians in the Gaza Strip live under an Israeli blockade that effectively prevents the influx of necessary materials to build a viable economy.
However, it is worth noting that Israel is not one of the major violators of human rights and often gets more flack for its actions than many more significant violators including: Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Iran, China, Myanmar, North Korea, Russia, Turkey, Uganda, Vietnam, etc.
Israel also protects numerous human rights denied in many other countries such as: the Right to an Abortion, Women's Rights, Right to Vote, Right to Freedom of Speech and the Press, Right to Bring Claims before a Court (the Israeli Supreme Court also accepts Palestinian Cases making it the only Supreme Court in the world to extend civil jurisdiction to a militarily occupied region), the Right to Sexual Freedom (including recognition of Homosexual Marriages), and the Freedom of Religion.
What was the name of an area in western Palestine that includes most of present-day Israel?
How much financial aid do you give to Israel?
I don't give any, but the US government gives Israel billions of dollars every year.
Why does the government of Iran see Israel as illegitimate state?
Like 32 other countries (most of them Muslim-majority), Iran views Israel as an illegitimate state due to it being created out of land that was, for times prior to the British mandate, ruled by the Ottoman empire (a nominally Muslim-majority empire). That a non-Muslim state was created out of land that had once been under Muslim rule irks the religious Muslims in these countries, since the religion dictates that such land as Israel's is, in perpetuity, part of the Dar-ul Islam ("Land of Islam"), a similar concept to the term "Christendom" (or the land in which Christianity is or was the majority religious belief). Thus, since Iran's government is one that is dominated by the laws of the mullahs who hold jurisprudential supremacy (an "Islamic republic"), it makes sense for Iran to follow along this party line in classifying Israel as an illegitimate state and supporting Palestinian and Lebanese Islamists who also don't recognize the state for ethnoreligious reasons. In addition, Islam views Jerusalem as a holy city due to the Dome of the Rock and other Islamic structures on the Temple Mount; this is compounded by the fact that a number of religious Israeli Jews support any measure to take over the Temple Mount and rebuild the Jewish Temple (which was last destroyed by the Romans in AD 70) that once stood where the Dome of the Rock and al-Aqsa Mosque once stood. Thus, the Dome of the Rock figures as a frontispiece on many Palestinian Islamist organizations' flags, and Iran has long declared its wish for the restoration of the region that is now Israel to Muslim rule; this was an avowed goal of the Ayatollah Khomeini when Iran tried to take over Iraq in the latter part of the Iran-Iraq War of the 1980s. At best, its another form of religious territorial chauvinism and irredentism, similar to the Christendom concept.
Of course, this reason, shared to lesser extremes by other non-Arab majority-Muslim states, differs from both the reasons of opposition from majority Arab-Muslim states (who see it as both a religious and ethnocultural issue) and the reasons of opposition from non-Arab non-Muslim states: countries like Taiwan and Cuba (a Stalinist state which maintains a dogma of anti-Zionism) may point to further errata such as the assertion that Israel has continually and repeatedly failed to uphold its obligations under the United Nations Charter as it declared it would do in UN resolution 273 which officially invited Israel to become a member of the UN. These obligations include ending illegal settlements and allowing refugees to return or be compensated for their losses; however, Israel abstained from doing the former for the nationalist sake of accomplishing a Jewish-majoritarian state and abstained from the latter due to the view that an Arab-majority state carved out of the envisioned Eretz Israel would be the most pertinent obligation to be fulfilled by Israel to former Arab residents of the region (compared to an "incomplete" approach of merely paying off refugees for land attained).
When in Israel's history was the nation blessed?
Has not come yet. All they had was persecutions and no permanent [Promised] land of their own, until the United Nations interceded on their behalf.
Is Israel smaller than most other countries and border the Persian Gulf?
Yes and No. Israel is smaller than 152 of the world's other countries, but it does not border the Persian Gulf.
What country is right below Israel?
No country is directly south of Israel, however, Egypt is west (somewhat south) and Jordan is east (somewhat south).
