Because they served in the army. They're no more heroes than people serving now, but they have a day to recognize them. I would much prefer to honor the people that served and aren't here to celebrate, but the world doesnt work like that
First, confirm he was awarded two Bronze Stars. Look through his personal papers for his discharge. There is an Awards and Decorations section on it. If the Bronze Star is listed, they would have been awarded with a written Citation. Look for those. If neither of these can be located, check for his discharge at your County Clerk Office. Many returning vets were told to file their Discharge there (I did). If he ever bought a house, particularly with a VA GI BILL loan, he would have had to prove he was Honorably discharged by submitting the discharge. And as a vet, it's possible he may have qualified for a veteran's exemption on his property taxes, so check the local assessors office. And if he joined a local VFW or American Legion post, they may have a discharge on file. If all this fails, take proof of your "kinship" along with all information you have (Name, service, dates of service, rank, where served, etc) to a Veterans Service Officer at most federal buildings and some county office buildings, and they will help you out.

Why was jet fighting important in the Korean War?
WW1 (1914-1918) was man's first experience at fighting in the sky; wooden framed airplanes covered with cloth (canvas), powered by primitive propellered engines, and no parachutes for the crashing pilot; if the plane didn't burn on the way down, he might be able to ride it out and crash land. If it burned on the way down, then he was finished. WW2 (For the US/1941-1945) was refined into metal airplanes, better machineguns & cannons, faster machines, and parachutes for the airmen. Korean War (1950-1953) was man's first experience at fighting with jets against jets; although old WW2 propeller driven airplanes were used (Corsairs, Mustangs, B-29 Superfortress, Bearcats, etc.) the real eye opener were the NEW JETS. Still armed with machineguns (.50 caliber) but travelling at nearly 600 mph. Faster, smoother, and deadlier. The US F-86 Sabre, F-84 Thunderstreak, and F-80 Shooting Star, and USN's Panthers were still primitive compared to what was to come, after the war. But the handwriting was on the wall: Speed. Missiles were soon to follow. Vietnam War (1961-1975) was refined jets built from lessons learned during the first jet war. The F-86 Sabre gave it's job over to the new F-100 Supersabre as a beginning; and may have shot down the first enemy MIG during the Vietnam War, using cannon fire. The only miscalculation that the US designers made was believing that future dog-fights (aerial combat) would be done with MISSILES ONLY. Consequently, some of the new jets were built WITHOUT "Guns." Such as the vaunted F-4 Phantom II. Heavy jet losses over North Vietnam forced a change; TOP GUN school in Southern California was created by the US Navy and US Airmen returned to the skys of North Vietnam with a vengence, this time armed with guns (cannons). Our last two ACE's of the 20th Century were made by US Airmen flying a jet that was originally designed with only missiles; the F-4 Phantom. Today's 21st Century Jets can fly by themselves, and are computer assisted. UAV's are past the drawing board.

Where did soldiers sleep during the Korean War?
Fighting men of the 20th century, slept as fighting men have slept for centuries; rolled up in blankets and/or sleeping bags on the ground. Sometimes the ground was a "hole" or "bunker", or just a hilltop. But it was ground. For the 20th Century fighting men, tanks and armored vehicles were sometimes used to sleep on or inside. For armor crewmen in WW2, Korea, and Vietnam, Army folding cots (wood/aluminum and canvas) were sometimes available to sleep on. Cots could be strapped to the outsides of armored vehicles (tanks and Armored Personnel Carriers).
