Literacy

Literacy is the ability to read, write, speak, and listen in meaningful and socially-acceptable ways. One who is able to do that is literate and those who can't are illiterate. Similarly, one can be computer literate or illiterate, depending upon the ability to use a computer. Questions about literacy are asked in this category.

When should a child start to read?

I learned the sounds (and names) of the letters when I started school at age 5. There were nearly 50 kids in the class. The main method used to teach reading was 'chalk-and-talk' with phonic methods as far as possible. There was none of that nonsense about 'reading readiness' or child-centred education. What's more there were practically no literacy problems, either!

What is a phonics?

Phonics is a kind of instruction that focuses on the different sounds letters make. There are more than 44 different sounds in the English language and more than 1200 ways to spell them. It is taught by teaching students all these different sounds and spellings and then showing them how to blend them together to guess the pronunciation of words they do not know.

Right now, phonics instruction is really popular with Programs like Hooked on Phonics and Fast Forward. However phonics instruction is still a controversial topic. Many students find it frustrating and ineffective. In my opinion, struggling readers and really anyone who is learning to read, needs to learn phonemic awareness first.

Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear all the different sounds in a word. If a reader can not hear the different sounds they will be unable to tell a long vowel from a short one or consonant blends or digraphs apart. Some programs teach phonemic awareness before phonics which allows students to build these basic auditory processing skills before trying to make sense of the 44 different sounds and the letters that go with them. My favorite all-encompassing reading program is Sound Reading Solutions (www.SoundReading.com). It comes in three levels that target different ages and abilities and is the best program I have found that teaches all the foundational skills essential to reading. They have a great page on their website that explains this in even more detail - http://soundreading.com/On-Phonics.html

What is the difference between a primary source and secondary source?

Primary sources were either created during the time period being studied or were created at a later date by a participant in the events being studied (as in the case of memoirs). They reflect the individual viewpoint of a participant or observer. Primary sources enable the researcher to get as close as possible to what actually happened during an historical event or time period.

A secondary source is a work that interprets or analyzes an historical event or phenomenon. It is generally at least one step removed from the event and is often based on primary sources. Examples include scholarly or popular books and articles, reference books and textbooks.
