What is the difference between a berber carpet and a regular carpet?
As an installer, I look for good solid rows in the manufacturing process.
As a home owner, be aware of pattern match when buying Berber. and be sure to seal the edges to be seamed with latex edge dressing.
---- Berber by definition means a multi colored carpet. Most often when people say Berber they mean a looped carpet. Loop carpets are most commonly in nylon and olefin fibers. Nylon has a softer feel but isn't usually seen multi colored. If you are looking for a looped carpet with a pattern, nylon is a good choice since nylon is a very strong. Olefin loop carpets are very inexpensive. Often they are mixed with a small amount of nylon because olefin fiber is hard to dye. Made in a dense level loop they are one of the most durable styles. They are often available in 12' and 15' widths for larger rooms. One last thing to think about and this doesn't often happen in a well constructed carpet. If a strand of carpet is pulled, it can leave a row bare. This is a very hard fix and often cannot. This happens from pets and at the seams from the vacuum. As long as you keep and pulled loops cut, it is unlikely to happen; still it can and is something to consider. Shorter loops help as well as rooms that do not have seams.
