Rodents

All rodents have one upper jaw and one lower jaw set of two continuously growing front teeth that must be worn down by gnawing. The order's smallest members are the 2.4 inch/6 centimeter African pygmy mouse and Baluchistan pygmy jerboa. Questions typically refer to the order's laboratory contributions to scientific advances, important representatives, geographic ranges, and environmental roles in seed dispersion and soil food web life.

What lives longer a guinea pig or a hamster?

That's hard to say. I've had many hamsters, and currently have 3 pet guinea pigs. So here are the Pros and Cons of each: Pros of guinea pigs include: Larger animals, so you can hold them easier and interact a little better; they communicate much more than most hamsters; they have more distinct personalities; guinea pigs can't climb, so while you still need a top for the cage, you don't have to worry about them climbing out as much; a lot of guinea pigs just 'sleep' at different times of the day- they are not nocturnal; SOME guinea pigs can go longer when being held and not go to the bathroom on you; when guinea pigs trust you enough to lick you, you feel really happy and content; guinea pigs will lie down on you and stretch out if they feel comfortable enough. Pros of hamsters include: They do not poop as much, or have as big poops as guinea pigs; they pee less when they do pee; they don't make such a big mess in their cage; you don't have to have as big a cage as guinea pigs and you don't need to clean it as often; you don't have to feed them as much; some say hamsters may be cuter; hamsters might look cuter while they are sleeping because they can achieve different positions, making it cuter to watch them sleep. Cons of guinea pigs include: Harder to clean the cages; you have to clean the cages more often; you have to feed them more; if you hold them for too long they WILL poop on you; some may pee on you when held for too long; they REQUIRE vitamin C supplements EVERY day; they MUST have their fingernails clipped every so often; they might need to have their teeth trimmed- which would be best to take the pig to the vet; it would be best to wash the guinea pig every month or every other month; they smell more than hamsters. Cons of hamsters include: Not as easy to hold them as guinea pigs; they are very active and run around a lot, making them hard for small children to hold; hamsters may bite people (guinea pigs will too- but not very often, if you treat them right); hamsters are known to try to climb to the top of the cage, push the top off and escape (mine have- almost all 8 of them); if the hamsters do escape, and run under say the refrigerator, it would be extremely difficult to retrieve them; hamsters are prone to tumors from running against the sides of their treadmill (guinea pigs are not - it would be AWFUL to give them exercise wheels and balls- they can severely hurt their backs and feet). Hope this helps.

Can chinchillas live in glass cages?

Yes chinchillas can live in grass cages, but i prefer that you don't put them in grass cages because if you use the grass from the ground they could have all different bacteria on it. To make sure check with your veternarian or your local pet store.

What is the best the best rodent to have as a pet?

I would say a hamster because they are cute, fluffy, and they eat all of the vegetables you don't want to. They are relatively easy to take care of and they can't escape too often.

i would actually say gerbils because they are very nice and energetic and curious and if you have two hamsters in a cage together they WILL kill each other

What are mice used for?

They are a critical part of the food chain and ecosystem in which they live. They are herbivores, eating mostly grains and seeds, but have adapted in urban areas to a broader diet out of necessity. Many of our favorite animals rely on a supply of small rodents like mice for their food: foxes, hawks, owls and other birds of prey, and reptiles like lizards and snakes.

How much fruit and vegetable should I feed my two guinea pigs a day?

Copied from http://theguineapigrescue.com/care.htm

There's nothing quite like the sheer joy you'll see on your guinea pig's face when you bring them their daily fresh veggies! View our comprehensive link at the top of the page for a complete vegetable list, but here are a few of our favorites:

* In the morning, one tomato wedge and one baby carrot per guinea pig.

* In the evening, approximately 12 hours after your first feeding, feed a mix of about three veggies, which could include Romaine or Spring Mix lettuces, kale, celery (with all strings removed!), parsley, cilantro, cantaloupe, watermelon, cucumber, collard greens, green or red bell pepper (not the hot, spicy peppers), apple slices.

* Do not feed too many fruits that are high in sugar. They seem to like veggies the most anyway!

* Select vegetables that are high in vitamin C, as they do not make this on their own and need it from an outside food source, just like humans. Healthy piggies need 10 mg / kg of vitamin C per day, which, if not supplied in their food diet, must be supplemented with crushed vitamin C tablets for animals, sprinkled most easily on the cut side of their morning tomato every other day. Vitamin C added to the water is NOT the best source.
