How did the King of Siam keep his country from becoming a European colony?

Siam was the only country in Southeast Asia to avoid colonization by Britain or France, the two main colonizers in the area. The most commonly cited reason by historians is that the rulers of Siam gave concessions to Western countries, mostly having to do with trade. Thus, Britain got what they wanted out of the situation without having to maintain colonial rule.

Should you go to Thailand?

yes, highly recommended! Thailand has a great culture and very warm, welcoming people. It is safe, but there can be pickpockets in Bangkok. that's about the worst it gets usually.

may I recommend some sights in Thailand: Wat Para Kheo and Wat Pho, in addition to other temples. be sure to wear respectful clothes (no short-shorts or tank tops for women) when visiting a temple in Thailand.

also, it's nice to dip a foot into Laos and relatively easy to cross into Vientiane, the capital. do not go into Burma (Myanmar) at this time, and probably a good idea not to go to any Thai-Burma border towns, either. (Mae Sot, Mae Sariang, etc.)

beaches are nice, but it's good to see other parts, too, that aren't already run-down by tourists.

hope this helps! have a good trip - tee-o hai sa-nook na ka!

What does thai 'naa rak wan' means?

That sounds strange. It doesn't make any sense for me. I understand naa rak which means 'lovely' or 'cute.' For 'wan,' if a speaker pronounces it long, it can be 'sweet' (but never be put together with 'naa rak' likes this). But if a speaker pronounces 'wan' a little bit shorter, it turns to be 'day' instead. That's worse.

Also, 'wan' can be a woman's name, too. However, you would put 'wan' before 'naa rak' if you want to compliment that person.
