VA was founded by the East India Company who sent 107 men to search for gold in 1607. Within six months only 39 men were still alive due to disease and bad water. They had built a fort in the worse land in the area. This was an investment by the company to make money and not an attempt to start a colony. John Smith arrived on the second ship to take over the dying colony and was there only about 6 months. He had to return home after an accident with gunpowder.

At the Battle of Hampton Roads in 1862, the USS Monitor and the CSS Virginia engaged in the first battle of ironclads. Although a technical draw, the Virginia had to return to dock for repairs. Its earlier assaults on wooden Union warships would not be repeated.
