No-one, contrary to certain answers given on this site, is born an atheist. Babies are born "innocent" and in my opinion are probably closer to God than any adult. This innocence or Neutrality is a natural state. As babies grow they develop the mental capacity to reason. They are bold enough to question things around them - all parents remember when their children first asked "why, this?" or "why, that?". They are intelligent enough that if reasonably exposed to religion they can and do decide for themselves what they actually accept as true.
