Benito Mussolini affected society today by means of his contributions in modernizing Italy. He also influenced dictators such as Hitler and Franco, who made fascism appealing to the working class of Europe until today.

He and his mistress Clara Petacci were caught by communist partisans trying to escape Italy into Switzerland on April 27, 1945, where they had planned to travel via plane to Spain. The partisans put him on a train back to comune Mezzegra along with 15 other fascists. He was executed by shooting there the next day.

Mussolini's ultimate legacy was not a desirable one. After being shot, his corpse and that of Petacci were thrown in the back of a truck and taken to Milan. He was strung up in the Piazza Quindici Martiri (Literally, "The Square of Fifteen Martyrs"; named for 15 anti-fascists hung there just weeks prior to Mussolini's fall from grace) by a meat hook, where his lifeless body was shot, stoned, and spat upon. As you can clearly see, the people hadn't an ounce of love left for him. Some even speculate that it was the news of Mussolini's horrific death (and consequent parading) that aided in Hitlers' decision to commit suicide.

Mussolini signed the pact with Hitler on 22 May, 1939. He had gotten a promise from Hitler that Germany would not start a war for 3 years and give Italy time to build up their arms. Italy ordered 6 battleships and additional munitions factories. On 1 September 1939, Germany invaded Poland. The Germans took Belgium, then invaded Norway and Denmark. On June 10,1940, Mussolini gave a fiery speech to annouce that Italy was joing the fight. After German troops entered Paris on 14th June, Mussolini ordered the invasion of France to start on the 18th but due to delays, the attack did not start until 4 days before France had surrendered. Not to be out down by Hitler, Mussolini launched the invasion of British Somaliland on 3 August 1940 with 40,000 men from Ethiopia. On 13 September, his desert army in Libya crossed into Egypt. Without informing Hitler, he launched an attack into Greece. Then the war really got started.

Neither of them were. Both were dictators who ruled over different versions of capitalism.

He totalled about nine months of active, front-line trench warfare during which he contracted paratyphoid fever. His career as a soldier ended in 1917 when he was wounded by a mortar shell in his trench leaving at least 40 shards of shrapnel in his body.

He was captured by the partisans. The Communist partisans took him out the next morning and shot him. Then he and his mistress were taken to Milan and hung up for public display. But he was already dead when they hung him upside down.
