Brakes and Tires

Vehicles require brakes and tires to be steered and controlled. Tires allow better vehicle performance by providing a flexible cushion to absorb the shock, while brakes control the spin of the tires, thus controlling the speed of the vehicle.

1997 Lincoln Town car with abs brakes. Which brake line goes to which rear brake from abs unit one line is larger?

USUALLY the fatter line is for the front disk brakes. I am assuming your vehicle is disk / drum combination. To really confirm just trace the lines and see where they go. Trace the easiest line(s) first. You wont have to trace the last line as its the last wheel you didnt trace it to.

How much should you be charged to balance your tires when you buy new tires?

The shop I work in charges $22.00 dollars for mounting and balancing each new tire.

Another Answer:

Some shops charge more and some assume that the tires must be balanced before you can use them and include balancing in the price of the tires. Unfortunately, that often makes it difficult to comparison shop.

In reality, tire shops will charge whatever they want to balance tires. You can either pay the price or shop elsewhere.

Is a tire size 185 same as P185?

- My van tires are - - P215/65R15 95H.

- That P means it's a passenger vehicle tire,

- 215 is tread width in millimeters,

- 65 is the aspect ratio, it's a wide oval. ( 75 means it's rounder in cross section)

- R means it's a Radial

- 15 means it fits a 15" rim.

- 95 -is it's load range, and in the ISO/Metric Standards list '95' means each tire can support 1500 pounds weight.

- H - The final letter is it's 'speed rating' , and again in the ISO/metric system, 'H' means it's rated at speeds up to 130 mph.

Does temperature affect tire pressure?

Yes, if the weather is hot - Air in the tire will expand slightly and will have an effect on the pressure as it wants to take up more room in size. If the weather is cold the air will contract and more air will be needed - the reason for the extra air is so that the tire doesn't go down. The Math: Pressure increases directly with Temperature. So there's an easy formula to use.

Since 0 psig in a tire is really 14.7 psia and 0oC is really 273oK the temperature and pressure for the tires you fill is Start Pressure = (Pressure on the gauge + 14.7) psia, and Start Temperature = (Measured temp +273) . Temperature at the end = End Temperature = (Measured temp in C + 273), and pressure at the new temperature = End Pressure So: End Pressure = Start Pressure x End Temperature / Start Temperature Since End Pressure includes an extra 14.7 psia, subtract it out and that's the pressure on the gauge in psig.

You should be able to find a shop manual at your local library with the right info...make copies as they are usually only in the REFERENCE section....good luck:)

How are car tires manufactured?

Ruber tires are manufactured after a chemical formula produced at the lab of the company which consists mostly of coal and other resins in a powder state.

The quantities of this products is weighed carefully considering the capacity of their equipment that will handel the mixture. This equipment is called a "mill" and consists of two steel rollers of about three feet diameter by ten feet length (give or take), the rollers are heated by steam, encased in an open pan. Here the operator stands in front of the rollers and scoops the mixture with a small shovel and sprinkels it on top of the rollers which by now are turning. The pressure and heat while squeezing and turning the powdery mixed, melt it and after a while it becomes a fused sheet of the product that after turning and churning gets wrapped about the rollers. When this happens, the operator cuts the sheet with a small knife several times bringing the material from one end to the other of the rollers in order to get it all well mixed. When the consistency of the material is even the operator proceeds to extract the material from the mill by cutting one uninterrupted strip of rubber.

What happens after is this rubber is placed into molds where the steel belt clips are presed into the rubber.

Later on, precise lengths of the material are cut and then inserted into other moulds where by heat and pressure the rubber is given the shape and pattern of the tire.

I hope this will give the idea of how tires are made.
