What did Germany have to do before it could invade Britain?

They did, actually, occupy a few tiny islands in the English Channel during the Second World War.

But for a large scale invasion, they would have needed to make it past coastal defenses, and the airman that defended the skies above. That was a daunting task for Hitler, since he needed to dedicate his planes to invasions of other countries.

Long story short? Hitler was just spread too thin, and he couldn't muster enough aircraft for a large scale invasion.

He did, however, carry out many bombings on the city, both with bombers and with V2 Rockets ("Bouncing Bombs").

Why did the German's think Britain was going to attack calais?

Because it was closest to Britain, so a Channel crossing there would the easiest for the Allies. Another reason was that the Allies did not want the Germans to find out what the real intended invasion location for D-Day was, and they had set up an elaborate misinformation campaign. They succeeded in making the Germans think that the invasion would indeed take place much farther north, in the Calais region.

Who did Britain buy their oil from during World War 2?

Romania and the Soviet Union right up until the invasion. I believe there might have been some small wells in Austria, to the north-east of Vienna. For much of the war Germany relied on synthetic oil made from low grade coal (by hydrogenation). By far the biggest factory was the Leuna-Werke, which claimed to be the biggest single industrial plant in the world at the time. Making oil from coal is an extremely expensive process and requires a very large investment. The construction of the large synthetic oil plants was one of the clearest early signs that Germany was preparing for war. Joncey

Who was the British Prime Minister during World War 2?

Britain had three Prime Ministers during World War 2. The first was Neville Chamberlain who attempted initially to appease Hitler to prevent a second world war. However Hitler invaded Poland in September, 1939 which prompted Chamberlain to declare war on Germany.

Following the failed Norwegian campaign against Germany, Chamberlain resigned as Prime Minister, and was replaced on the 10th of May, 1940 by Winston Churchill. The European war finished on the 8th of May 1945 when the allies declared VE day (the surrender itself having been signed on the previous day).

Churchill remained Prime Minister until the 27th of July, 1945, when he was replaced by Clement Attlee after Labour won a landslide election victory.

On the 14th of August 1945, Japan agreed to surrender and ultimately signed the surrender papers on the 2nd of September 1945, marking V-J Day and the end of World War 2.

Clement Attlee remained as Prime Minister until the 26th of October 1951 when he was replaced by a re-elected Conservative party led by Winston Churchill.

Because of the total secrecy at the facility, most of the early computers which were developed there were destroyed at the end of the war including the Enigma code breaker.

How did the British react when they found out about the Holocaust?

Britains response was of anger and disgust. The camps were kept a secret from the outside world until 1944 when some of the first were found and in 1945 Belsen was discovered. My grandad was an engineer in WW2 and he was one of the first to walk into Belsen. When he walked out he never talked about what he saw. we only found this out when he died and we were reading his military records. The feeling would of been the same for all soldiers and civilians who entered these "camps". The governments reaction was to put all Nazi leaders on trial when the war was won. The Nuremburg trials.
