Should you buy a DVR like TiVo or get the service from your cable company?
Getting service from a cable company is generally cheaper. Most cable company's DVR service seem to run approx. $10 per month, in addition to your current cable company bill. Generally, there is no equipment to purchase so the only cost you pay is your monthly bill. Note: This may or may not be the case with your cable company. Consult your cable company for exact pricing and terms for DVR service. Purchasing your own DVR can mean anywhere from roughly $100 (for a standard TiVo DVR) to $600 for some higher-end DVRs. The higher-end DVRs include fancy features such as DVD recording and the like. Plus, you may pay an additional monthly fee, ($12 per month for TiVo, for example). While purchasing your DVR may be more expensive initially, your DVR offers more features and flexibility than your cable company's service. **alternate response** In my neck of the woods (South FL)renting a cable DVR is $8 monthly for the hardware rental and an additional $5 for programming service. I pay $5 a month for a DirecTV DVR programming with a hardware lump sum cost of $50 (the hardware is often available for free with a new installation)

Can you download Blu-ray on your computer?
Yes, you can.
Ripping a Blu-Ray video is just a step up from ripping a DVD. Except the sheer amount of data to be processed, the principles of burning a Blu-Ray movie remains the same with burning a DVD movie.
Take note though, that a Blu-Ray can contain 25 to 50 GB of data, or 50 to 100 GB for dual-layer discs. Compare that to the 4.7 GB for DVD, 8.5 GB for double-layer discs -- this will often translate to a longer time needed to copy Blu-Ray or complete one burning process.
There are differences, of course, but those that generally doesn't affect the burning process directly. Blu-Ray employs the Advanced Access Content System (AACS), BD+, and BD-ROM Mark. However, capable Blu-Ray burning software has the necessary algorithms to bypass these schemes.
What is the function of splitter?
Splitters typically have 3 labels: ADSL, Phone and Line. To use a splitter you connect your telephone devices (eg phone, fax or answering machine) to the connection labelled phone, your ADSL modem to the ADSL connection and the line to the wall socket. If you have other telephone wall sockets in the property on the same telephone line you will need to plug in filters between the phone and the wall socket.
In addition to the user installable spliter in the photograph above, you can have a central splitter (see right) installed by a telephone technician. A central splitter is installed on the telephone line before the first phone point in the property. Thus the central splitter protects the all the phone exensions from the ADSL signal. A new phone point is wired into the central ADSL splitter specifically for the ADSL modem. The ADSL modem will not work on any other point in the property.
Central Splitters are sometimes used when user installable splitters and filters do not result in a reliable ADSL connection
