To get to the oil drain plug on a 2008 CTS you'll need to remove the protective shroud held in by 4 screws. Pull the shroud down at the rear and slide it to the rear to remove. The oil pan is now easily seen with the drain plug coming off the driver's side.

I bought a used 03 two years ago and shortly afterwards I started to hear a "bearing hum" coming from the rear at about 40 mph. Fortunately I had a warranty, because it turned out to be what was described to me as "the whole rear differential assembly", and that it was common among 03's, even though mine only had 22K on it. I've also had a problem with the sunroof control switch. I would come out in the morning and find that the sunroof was open in the back. Sometimes the sunroof would go "goofy" all by itself when I used the power windows, or put any kind of electrical draw on it. Again, warranty paid for the new switch, and I was on my way. My latest repair was a left tail light / brake light bulb. I did that myself....no big deal. So far that's been the only things to go awry. Good Luck! I was told yesterday by the tech at jiffy lube that my 2003 cts has a "sealed" transmission-NO DIPSTICK! Cannot check level-he said maybe a dealer can. He also said the chassis was "sealed"-no lubing necessary.

Yes, that is one way to do it, but why? Why not just remove the drain plug and drain the oil. Removing the oil by sucking it out the dipstick tube will not get all the old oil out, but it can be done that way for whatever reason.

1.1) Gently pry right side of AC vents from dash releasing clips. All clips release with pressure. 2.1) Gently pry left side of AC vents from dash releasing clips. 3.1) Pull AC vents from dash. 4.1) Set AC vents on dash above opening. 5.1) Set parking brake, shift to low gear. 6.1) Open lower pocket(where lighter is). 7.1) Remove insert(coin) from pocket. 8.1) Remove exposed screw from insert removal. I believe 2 screws. NOTE - If using a non-magnetized socket when reinstalling this screw, place a piece of paper onto the socket first and push screw into socket to secure. 9.1) Gently pry top right side of dash AC controls panel releasing clips. 10.1) Gently pry bottom right side of dash AC controls panel releasing clips. 11.1) Gently pry top left side of dash AC controls panel releasing clips. 12.1) Gently pry bottom left side of dash AC controls panel releasing clips. 13.1) Pull entire dash AC control panel from dash, while connected, lay to left side of center console toward feet. 14.1) Remove one screw top left from AC vent cavity. 15.1) Remove one screw top right from AC vent cavity. 16.1) Remove one screw bottom left from AC control panel cavity. 17.1) Remove one screw bottom right from AC control panel cavity. 18.1) Pull car stereo from dash. 19.1) Remove antenna and release triggers on connectors to disconnect.

Under the front bumper there's a plastic trim piece that needs to be removed. Remove the pins that hold it into place and then you will be able to acess the fog light behind the rear bumper.

It's located "inside" the transmission, under the tranny's side-cover. It's labor intensive because you must lower the whole engine/transmission cradle to access it. Side-note: @ the dealer, $1,200 labor & $30 part. Sucks, don't it. If you're mechanically inclined, it can be done, just add part, tools and patience. Oh, and a tech manual.

You should follow the recommendation listed in your owner's manual. Or you can follow my recommendations which are every 5,000 miles or 6 months which probably are lower than the manufacture's, if you are using conventional oil. If you are using synthetic oil change it every 8,000 miles. Be sure and change the filter every time and I recommend you use an Ac/Delco filter. Excellent filter that is as good as any. Avoid cheap filters. Do not use any oil additives. Make sure and use the exact weight oil listed in your owner's manual or written on the oil cap. Probably 5w30 or 5w20. The air filter is almost as important as the oil filter. Change the air filter every 30,000 miles. To help avoid a burnt out fuel pump, do not forget the fuel filter. Change it every 50,000 miles.

My 2003 cts has "differentail noise"not wheel noise. I hear its somewhat common. Unfortunately rear end failure is somewhat common. I have had the same noise for years, and I am at 130,000 mi. No failure

The answer to your question is that when the transmission stays in the lower gear due to not having got your speed up, the noise will happen... it`s not due to a mechanical problem.
