Do you have to use a thermostat with a leopard gecko?

A thermostat to regulate or monitor heat is not required to keep a leopard gecko. This species will require an ambient heat of 88-94. This can be acquired on the warm side by using a heat mat. Most people refer to this as a UTH (under tank heater). Using a UTH allows the leopard gecko to rest it's belly against the warm substrates, which is key in keeping a leopard gecko. Most keepers will use a thermometer to monitor the heat within a terrarium.

Your leopard tortoise hasn't eaten in a month is he going to live?

First of all: Are you sure the tortoise has gone a month without food? Second, have you tried to feed it the proper diet? (Lettuce leaves, fresh green grass, cactus, etc.) Third: Is the tortoise wild caught or bred in captivity? Fourth, have you improperly treated the animal? If you have stuck it in a cage, never let it out, terrorized it, abused it, and only offered it something other than the proper greens, you definetly do not deserve to own any kind of animal and should be locked up forever. I have a tortoise we think was abused. The previous owner had him stuck in a tiny tank, and we suspect the poor tortoise was never let out to graze on grass or really sunbathe. He his diet was mainly dog food, so his shell was slightly deformed. He must've been treated very badly since he wouldn't stick his head out and if he did, he'd shy away as if we were going to beat him with a stick. For a few months, I rarely saw his head and to my knowledge, ate or drank nothing. With coaxing, care, and the help of our other pets, he poked his head out, ate, drank, and became a very happy little tortoise. Today, he loves the outdoors, snaps at fingers when eager for food, sunbathes, and loves walks, just like a regular tortoise. If your pet was in the same situation as mine, just do what I did, and let your tortoise be around other pets, (as long as they won't hurt him) set out fresh greens and water, and see what happens. Take it to a vet if something appears wrong.

What do you mean by cold blooded and warm blooded?

Warm-blooded and cold-blooded refers to animals that produce their own body heat and do not produce their own body heat, respectively.

On a micro biologic level, certain mitochondria within all warmblooded animals are 'defective', in a manner of speaking, in that one of the methods normal mitochondria store energy is by creating a chemical charge across a membrane, and in these specific mitochondria, the membrane is porous. To move the chemicals across the membrane, the mitochondria expend energy, or ATP, which produces heat. Since the membrane is porous, and cannot hold a charge, the chemical pumps run constantly, using energy at a consistent rate, and producing heat.

Warm-blooded animals have these mitochondria, and thus produce their own body heat. Humans are one example. Cold-blooded animals do not have these mitochondria, or if they do, have them in such small amounts that they cannot heat the animal's body sufficiently. Snakes and lizards are cold-blooded, which is why they can often be found in warm spots, basking in the heat of the sun.

How do you trim an iquana's nails?

DON'T do it yourself unless you're confident you can do it successfully ! Take the Iguana to a vet - it may cost you a small fee for their service BUT they're experts in this. You risk causing damage to your lizard's toes if you do it wrong (or the lizard makes a sudden movement !)

One way to keep the Iguana's nails in check (once they've been trimmed) is to place a piece of clean slate on the floor of the vivarium. That way it will act as a nail-file and keep the lizards nails short without you having to do anything.

How are amphibians related to reptiles?

Because they are both ectotherms.

Amphibians (class Amphibia; from Greek αμφις"both" and βιος "life") are a taxon of animals that include all living tetrapods (four-legged vertebrates) that do not have amniotic eggs, are ectotherms, and generally spend part of their time on land. Most amphibians do not have the adaptations to an entirely terrestrial existence. There are around 6,000 described, living species of amphibians.

Reptiles (Reptilia; from Latin repere, "to creep") are tetrapods and amniotes, animals whose embryos are surrounded by an amniotic membrane. Today they are represented by four surviving orders: Crocodilia (crocodiles, caimans and alligators), Sphenodontia (tuatara), Squamata (lizards, snakes and amphisbaenids), and Testudines (turtles). Reptiles inhabit every continent except for Antarctica, although their main distribution comprises the tropics and subtropics.

Herpetology (Greek ἑρπετόν herpeton "to creep" and λόγος logos "explanation") is the branch of zoology concerned with the study of reptiles and amphibians.

Can a desert tortoise see in color?

i think they can. my pet tortoise went over to a yellow toy, looked at it, then walked away. then he went to some grass, looked at it, then ate it. this should clarify it.

Yes, they are attracted to the brightly colored flowers in the desert. I have a tortoise that loves to eat bright dandelions. He can see them from quite a ways away, and will traverse great lengths to get to them.
