Cat Maintenance

Cat maintenance focuses on the hair and claws of the cat. Combing a cat’s fur is an excellent way of getting rid of hair balls and checking for fleas. One should provide a scratching post to keep the cat's nails trimmed.

What does 'herding cats' mean?

It expresses how difficult it is to handle a group of people who all want to do something different. Or, more generally, it means that something is difficult, and perhaps a bit chaotic.

You have heard of a male un-castrated house cat that marks territory as a cotter cat Where does this term come from and what is correct spelling?

I think this may be the term you are looking for. Most authorities agree that the domestic cat descended from the Caffre cat, a small breed of African wildcat. The Caffre cat was domesticated in ancient Egypt, possibly as early as 2500 bc.

Why is 4 week old kittens penis so red?

Red or bright pink is a common color for a cat's penis. We don't normally see them because cat's are great about tucking them back in and usually you'd only catch a peak when they are cleaning themselves. I've worked with hundreds of male cats over the years and can only count a handful of times I've been "flashed". However, if your kitten's penis is bloody, bumpy, or your kitten seems to be having pain while urinating, then you should call your vet immediately to get him checked out.

What can you do about your kitten's litter box if you clean it out every day and change it once a week but there is still an odor?

We have had EXCELLENT luck with a product called EVER CLEAN. We've got 5 cats in the house, and visitors find that hard to believe since they never smell any odor.

If a cat has missed the box, and urine has gotten on your floor, clean with a warm solution that is heavy on white vinegar. There also is a new product that has recently been introduced called 0 Odor...and that's what it provides. But the best way to control the odor is to prevent it in the first place, and that's where the EVER CLEAN comes in. We've tried ALL the current litters, and EVER CLEAN works best for us.

I used to have the same problem, try using scented cat litter and if that still doesent work just spray some air freshner around the room if it really pongs!

Baking Soda, and try different brands and types of litter. They are not all the same quality. Just experiment until you find a good one.

The food your feeding makes a difference too. I mean, what goes in must come out. I found that when I feed my cats inferior food the box gets much worse.

Also, I don't know what your cleaning routine is right now, but cat pee can kind of soak into a plastic litter box. It helps if when you change the litter box, you empty it completely, let some dish-washing detergent soak in there for a while and then set it out to dry in the sun.

Be sure the litter box is a real one and not just a plastic organizer or such because most litter boxes are treated, but it should also have a smooth shiny inner surface. Using a clumping litter is really best, and most have odor neutralizers in them. Of course you could use litter box liners, but most of the time they get slashed by the cat's claws. I clean mine about every week or so, and I have no odors come from it unless she has a poop; and it is cleaned out right away. Also wipe from just above the litter the the rim every day. That will help to keep odors away.

You should change it like twice a week because it will stink really bad no matter what you do

I use Feline Pine's clumping formula, Its the best smelling/best odor control litter I've used yet. Best clumping too and eco friendly to boot!

You also may want to try cleaning the area around where you keep the litter box because sometime the cat may miss the litter box or kick some of its "wastes" out.

And also try buying a new litter box or keeping it in the garage so that you can't smell the odor anymore.

Your 3 day old kittens eyes are open is this normal?

How do I get rid of stray female cat in heat?

At what age do cats begin to reproduce?

There is no exact answer to this, just as there is no firm age in humans. It is recommended to spay/neuter your cat around 4-5 months. Doing this early will also help your cat from developing unwanted behavior like spraying, marking, and aggression. Your family vet will be able to tell you more about the development of your particular cat.

How long do you have to wait to stroke a newborn kitten?

It really depends on how the mom is, if it won't stress her out you can touch them as newborns, but it's good to wait a couple weeks.

How ofte should you feed your cats How often do you feed your cats What is healthiest for them Right now I feed them every 12hrs One of them needs to lose a few lbs?

Twice a day is good for adult cats, kittens should be fed 3 times a day. A mix of wet and dry food is best, so perhaps one feeding can be wet food, and the other can be dry. Just remember when you feed multiple times a day to split up the amount of food they are getting so you don't end up feeding too much in one day.

If your cat needs to lose weight, buying food that's marked "lean" is better than cheaper foods that say "weight maintenance" etc. (those usually are just empty filler ingredients with less real food), and you might have to feed your cats separately to make sure your heavier cat isn't eating more than her share. Exercise is also crucial to weight management so make sure your cat gets exercise every day.

How much do you feed a Kitten When it's old enough?

As for how much you should feed the kitten four to six times a day for young kittens, or three to four for older kittens, with small-sized meals usually two to three teaspoons of wet food (make sure you chop up the meat into little pieces). Kittens need a lot of food for them to develop and grow in a healthy manner, so give the kitten as much food as the kitten needs/eats.
